Last earnings call, Jul 16, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Citizens Financial Group reported strong second-quarter 2026 results driven by revenue growth, NII expansion, accelerating loan growth across businesses, and fee revenue strength led by capital markets and wealth. Management highlighted EPS growth (+15% sequential, +41% YoY), ROTCE improvement to 13.9%, positive operating leverage, continued deposit and loan momentum (including private bank growth), disciplined expense management, and favorable credit trends. Strategic initiatives—private bank expansion, Reimagine the Bank (RTB) digital/AI deployments, and capital markets buildouts—are progressing. Management reiterated medium-term financial targets (16–18% ROTCE by end of 2027) and a CET1 target range of 10.0–10.5%, with ongoing stock repurchases during the quarter and constructive commentary on stress test results and balance sheet strength.
Guidance
Management indicated they expect NII trajectory to remain positive driven by NIM expansion and loan growth and that they are likely above consensus (which was ~12.2–12.3 ROTCE or related consensus). Q3 NII guidance referenced roughly 2.5%–3.5% (linked-quarter) growth/guide. They reiterated medium-term ROTCE target of 16%–18% by end of 2027 and a CET1 operating range of 10%–10.5%. Private bank expansion: 15–16 PBOs by end of 2027. Management expects to be toward the high end of the firm's fee revenue guide for the year and sees continued NIM tailwinds from time-based repricing and hedging; loan growth for the full year expected to be slightly ahead of January guidance (on an average basis).
Risks flagged
Risks called out include ongoing CRE portfolio runoff and selective exposure (office and some multifamily acquired via Investor acquisition), modeling uncertainty related to Fed DFAST/stress testing (prior elevated stress loss results and expected model updates), potential deposit beta and funding cost volatility, competitive dynamics in private banking and capital markets, rating-agency perceptions requiring elevated capital, and macro uncertainty (rate path, potential Fed moves) that could affect margins and loan demand.
