About ConocoPhillips

ConocoPhillips works across the energy supply chain, finding, extracting, moving and selling resources such as crude oil, bitumen, natural gas, liquefied natural gas and natural gas liquids on a worldwide basis. Its work spans conventional drilling as well as harder-to-reach sources like tight oil, shale gas, heavy crude, oil sands and LNG projects, making it recognizable for the breadth of extraction methods it employs rather than a single resource type.

Its holdings are spread across regions and resource types, mixing unconventional assets in North America with established conventional operations across North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The company also holds interests in several LNG ventures, oil sands land in Canada, and a stockpile of exploration prospects, both conventional and unconventional, that could feed future output.

ConocoPhillips traces its founding to 1917 and runs its operations from Houston, Texas. Its shares trade on the NYSE under the ticker COP.

What they said
ConocoPhillips reported a strong second quarter with production above the high end of guidance (2.248 MMboe/d), record Permian volumes (>900 Mboe/d), robust cash generation (operating cash flow ~$7.2B, free cash flow ~$4.2B), and increased shareholder distributions ($3B: ~$2B buybacks + $1B dividends). Management announced a CEO transition (Ryan Lance retiring Sept. 1; Andrew O'Brien named President and incoming CEO; Connie Haines Welsh named CFO). Full-year guidance items were reiterated as unchanged. Management reiterated the company is on track to deliver a $7B free cash flow inflection, target returning 45% of CFO to shareholders for the year, and expects capital expenditures to decline as projects (including Willow and LNG projects) come online and reinvestment rates and breakeven prices structurally fall (free cash flow breakeven from mid-$40s WTI to low-$30s by 2029). Operations: Ras Laffan (Qatar) experienced shutdowns in Q2 with limited volumes; management assumes a ramp in Q3 but notes uncertainty. New business activity: progressing transactions in Iraq (Kirkuk) and Syria, low-entry capital expectations, and additional LNG offtake added (2 mtpa, Indonesia and Gulf Coast). Technology and productivity improvements in the Lower 48 were described (real-time fracture diagnostics, surfactants, far-field diverters).
Guidance
Full-year guidance unchanged; targeting return of 45% of CFO to shareholders for the full year (averaged ~40% in H1, expecting higher in H2); reaffirmed on-track to deliver $7B free cash flow inflection; expect CapEx to decline from current levels (Willow peak CapEx described as behind the company); free cash flow breakevens expected to fall to low-$30s WTI by 2029; Iraq (Kirkuk) transaction expected to close around year-end with acquisition capital of $300-$500M at close.
Risks flagged
Geopolitical disruption: conflict affecting Qatar (Ras Laffan shutdown) with uncertain ramp timing and throughput; broader Middle East operational and political risks tied to new transactions; commodity-price volatility impacting cash flow and distributions; project execution and timing risks for major projects (Willow, LNG trains) and assumptions about achieving cost reductions; regulatory/permit risk (though management cited improved permitting environment).
