About Diamondback Energy

Diamondback Energy is engaged in finding, developing and pumping oil and natural gas from onshore fields that require modern extraction methods, with nearly all of its activity clustered in the Permian Basin spanning West Texas and New Mexico. It is best known for its concentrated footprint there, drilling into formations such as the Spraberry and Wolfcamp layers on the Midland side and the Wolfcamp and Bone Spring layers on the Delaware side of that basin.

Beyond running its own wells, the company holds mineral and royalty stakes across a broad swath of acreage stretching into the Eagle Ford Shale as well as the Permian, which lets it collect income from land it does not operate directly. It also owns and runs midstream assets, including pipeline networks for moving crude oil and gas and a water-handling system, supporting the fields it works in the Midland and Delaware Basins.

Diamondback Energy traces back to 2007 and is based in Midland, Texas. It trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker FANG.

Last earnings call, Aug 3, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Diamondback Energy's Q2 2026 earnings call emphasized strong operational execution, production outperformance, balance-sheet improvements, and strategic optionality. Management highlighted a ~4% year-to-date production increase, gas production outperformance aided by improved marketing and new pipeline egress (Waha firming), and ongoing efficiency gains across drilling, completions and LOE. Key strategic initiatives include accelerated Barnett development, a shovel-ready behind-the-meter power project (Bryant Ranch) with first gas targeted in H2 2027 and grid connection potential in 2028, continued development of Deep Blue midstream/water capabilities, an expanding enhanced oil recovery (EOR/surfactant) pilot with promising initial results, and early-stage deployment of AI/automation for lift and downtime reduction. Capital allocation remains flexible: Diamondback removed a minimum free-cash-return commitment, is opportunistically buying back shares while also reducing net debt by $1.6 billion in the quarter, and intends to retain optionality to grow production organically (low single-digit growth) while maintaining capital efficiency. Management communicated cautious optimism on macro oil market dynamics (low global inventories), acknowledged inflationary pressures (casings, consumables, fuel), and reiterated readiness to adjust pace of growth if market conditions change.
Guidance
Management provided multiple forward-looking operational and financial signals: they expect low single-digit organic production growth into 2027 if they elect to grow, plan to run five frac crews consistently, and indicated a quarterly capital run-rate to hold production flat of roughly $1.0 billion to a little over $1.0 billion. They targeted Barnett drilling cost goals around ~$400/ft (with some wells already near or below that) and cited Wolfcamp D drilling stretch goal near $300/ft. LOE guidance centered around roughly $6/boe (management expects LOE to circle that level). For the Bryant Ranch power project, Diamondback expects first behind-the-meter gas delivery in H2 2027 and potential grid-connected power by 2028 (pending ERCOT Batch Zero determinations). Management also removed a fixed minimum free-cash-return percentage and will allocate buybacks opportunistically while prioritizing balance-sheet flexibility for upcoming debt maturities.
Risks flagged
Key risks mentioned include macro and geopolitical volatility disrupting price/inventory relationships; uncertainty in durable demand and LNG uptake; inflationary pressures (notably tubular/casing costs and other consumables) that could raise well and LOE costs; potential increased pressure on service costs if rig counts continue to rise; execution risk on scaling Barnett development and EOR programs (wide dispersion of EOR results); project and regulatory risk for the power project (ERCOT decisions and commercial agreements with hyperscalers); potential water/injection constraints in the basin (RRC changes) though management said they have not yet seen acute constraints and are working with Deep Blue to increase capacity; and the company's debt maturity runway (noted maturities in 2029-2032) that motivates conservative cash management.
