How Gekko’s stock data works
Every Gekko stock page is a pre-trade brief built from the same few measures. This page says what each one means, how often it updates and how the written parts are checked — so a reading on one page means the same thing on every other.
What the GekkoIndex zones mean
The GekkoIndex™ is Gekko’s proprietary 0 to 100 score of the smart money picture on a stock: an estimate of how much institutional buying or selling is behind recent trading. It is calculated after every US market close for roughly 5,500 liquid US stocks and ETFs, and every reading falls into one of five zones. The zones are the public face of the index; how the score itself is built is Gekko’s own and is not published.
- Selling <33
- Smart money likely exiting positions.
- Distribution 33–45
- Institutions potentially offloading.
- Neutral 45–60
- No clear directional signal.
- Accumulation 60–70
- Institutional interest building.
- Buying 70+
- Smart money likely accumulating heavily.
A stock page shows the current reading, its zone, the change over the last five sessions and, where the history is long enough, what followed past readings in each zone for that stock: the average share-price change over the 5, 10, 20 and 50 trading days after each daily reading. Those figures are averages of what happened, not forecasts, and a row is shown only once it rests on enough readings to mean something. Past behaviour does not guarantee future results.
What Gekko Fair Value measures
Gekko Fair Value is a single estimate of what a company’s shares are worth, produced by Gekko’s proprietary valuation model. The model weighs what the business earns and generates against how the market is pricing companies with its profile, and it runs again after every close, so the estimate follows the fundamentals rather than the headlines. The weighting is Gekko’s own. What matters on a stock page is the gap: how far the last close sits above or below the estimate, and which way that gap is moving.
A stock page calls the shares undervalued when the last close is more than 5% below the estimate, overvalued when it is more than 5% above, and about fair value in between — the same 5% band the checklist uses. The 12-month chart, where it appears, plots the estimate against the month-end share price so the gap can be read over time. Stocks and funds for which the model has no estimate simply show none.
How the swing-trade checklist is scored
The checklist is six questions a swing trader asks before a hold of about 20 trading days, each answered from the latest data by a fixed rule and shown with its own explanation. An item reads supportive, mixed or a headwind; an item with no data says so and is left out of the tally.
- Trend — where the last close sits against the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, and whether the two averages agree.
- GekkoIndex — the current zone: Buying and Accumulation are supportive, Neutral is mixed, Distribution and Selling are headwinds.
- Fair value — whether the price is more than 5% below Gekko Fair Value, more than 5% above it, or within that band.
- Smart money — the balance of open-market insider purchases and Congress disclosures over the last 90 days and unusual options activity over the last 30 days, each counting one vote when it has data.
- Earnings risk — whether the next report date falls inside the next 20 trading days or so.
- Seasonality — how the stock moved over the same 20 trading days in each of the last five years, shown only once three or more years of history exist.
The tally describes current data. It is not a recommendation, and no item is weighted above another.
How the Gekko Brief is written and checked
The Gekko Brief at the top of each stock page is written by an AI model from two things only: the figures shown on that page and the week’s headlines about the company, with a short summary of each. It is asked to describe the data and what moved the stock, in three short paragraphs, without advice, predictions or opinions of its own.
Before a brief is published it is checked automatically against the data it was written from. Every number in it must appear in that data — a figure that was computed, converted or invented fails the check. A brief that offers advice, names a news publisher or data provider, mentions a company outside the page’s own data, or runs too long fails as well. A brief that fails is not repaired; the page shows a plain templated summary of the same figures instead, until the next draft passes. Briefs are regenerated when the data behind them changes materially.
Gekko’s founder reviews the method and reads samples of the briefs; no one reads every brief before it is published, and the page says so on every brief. The company profile in the About section is produced the same way from public company information and checked with the same rules.
How often the data updates
Prices, moving averages, the GekkoIndex and Gekko Fair Value update after every US market close; a stock page shows the date of the close it was built from and the time it was last updated. Insider filings, congressional disclosures, unusual options activity, buybacks and fund positions are dated to when each became public, and the page states the window each covers. Earnings dates and estimates, analyst ratings and news headlines refresh daily. Gekko licenses its market data from established providers and does not publish real-time quotes or entire datasets.
Seen something wrong on a page? Every stock page carries a Report an error link that goes straight to the founder.
