About CNX Resources

CNX Resources operates in the natural gas business, concentrating on locating, developing and pulling gas from properties mostly situated in the Appalachian Basin. It has built a name around its extensive mineral rights in the Marcellus and Utica shale plays, as well as additional shale, shallow oil and gas, and coalbed methane acreage spanning multiple states. The company sells pipeline-quality gas mainly to wholesale buyers.

Its operations split into two segments, one tied to shale production and the other to coalbed methane. Beyond pulling gas from the ground, CNX runs midstream operations, having built and operating gathering pipelines stretching thousands of miles that carry gas from wells to interstate pipeline networks and local distribution points, along with processing facilities. It further supplies water handling services, taking care of sourcing, delivery and disposal for both its own drilling activities and outside customers.

The company can trace its roots back to 1860 and keeps its headquarters in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. It began using the CNX Resources name in November 2017, having formerly been known as CONSOL Energy Inc. Shares trade on the NYSE under the ticker CNX.

Last earnings call, Jul 30, 2026 AI summary

What they said
The call was a second quarter Q&A for CNX Resources focused on operational results, capital allocation, and low-carbon credit monetization. Management confirmed a near-term uptick in cash flows from carbon credit sales (45Z) and refined CRET-based carbon intensity calculations that raise projected monetization to roughly $40 million/year (starting in 2027) and a combined environmental attribute plus 45Z run rate target of about $90 million/year. Management reiterated their capital allocation philosophy (long-term value per share) and willingness to opportunistically repurchase shares in a countercyclical environment while maintaining discipline. Operational commentary covered Q3/Q4 production timing, slightly higher Q3 CapEx (but still expected to hit the full-year midpoint), drilling/well-cost trends (continued efficiency, ~$1.7k/ft drill cost), and specific TIL timing (12–13 TILs in Q3; remaining Utica TILs in Q4). Management projected stability in the PA AEC market but noted market volatility and said they mark to market as appropriate. Overall tone was confident and measured, with constructive operational updates and incremental positive financial developments (carbon credits, buyback flexibility), balanced by acknowledgement of near-term gas-market softness and some market volatility.
Guidance
- Carbon credit monetization: Treasury CRET refinement implies ~ $40M/year from 45Z credits (monetized in 2027). Combined with environmental attributes, management is targeting ~ $90M/year run rate. - Q3: Expect a cash-flow impact from ~$30M of monetization to show up in Q3 (comes through income tax expense line; cash flow effect visible). - CapEx: Q3 CapEx a bit higher versus Q2, then lower in Q4; company reiterated full-year CapEx guidance to the midpoint of the previously disclosed range. - Activity/TILs: Expect 12–13 TILs in Q3 from a large Marcellus pad; remaining Utica pad TILs to come in Q4. - AEC/Environmental attributes: Management is marking to market and assumes relative stability (flat) for planning; recognizes volatility.
Risks flagged
- Near-term softness in gas fundamentals for 2026 into 2027; management described 2026–2027 as potentially soft. - Volatility and uncertainty in the Pennsylvania AEC (environmental attribute) market; prices can vary and are marked to market. - Timing/administrative risk: final Treasury guidance/ruling timing affects comfort/visibility on full 45Z monetization. - Credit monetization accounting treatment: proceeds show in cash flow (income tax expense) and not in EBITDA, which could affect how earnings metrics reflect benefit.
