What they said
Credicorp reported a strong first-quarter 2026 with record net income driven by solid loan growth, improved asset quality, higher net interest income and diversified fee and FX income. Loans grew 8.2% (quarter-end balances) led by BCP retail and wholesale and Mibanco. NPL ratio improved to 4.3% and cost of risk was 1.3%, aided by better payment performance, refinements in underwriting and one‑off effects (mining profit‑sharing and pension inflows). Net interest income rose 10.9% with NIM at 6.6% as low-cost deposits (63.9% of funding) increased. Other core income grew 19.5% and fee income rose 15.6%; FX gains increased 30.6%. Insurance underwriting results declined 9.1% (inflation-linked claim effects), but excluding inflation impacts underwriting rose 4% YoY. ROE was 21.1% for the quarter. Management highlighted strategic progress on digital initiatives (Yape growth, neo-banking unit, internationalization prospects), resilience of the franchise, and governance updates following board refreshment. They emphasized macro risks (geopolitical tensions, higher oil prices) and local risks (presidential elections, potential El Niño impacts) and remain cautious despite strong operational momentum.
Guidance
GDP growth (Peru) for 2026 maintained at ~3.5%. Credicorp's medium‑term ROE guidance remains ~19.5% for the year, but management said they expect to be on the upper side of that range given Q1 performance (no formal upward revision provided). Loan growth guidance referenced around mid-single digits (management previously indicated ~8.5% guidance for the year) and risk‑adjusted NIM is expected to increase; cost of risk is expected to normalize higher from the current unusually low quarter but remain manageable. Management said they may update sustainable ROE/medium‑term targets after greater political clarity post‑elections.
Risks flagged
Key risks discussed include political uncertainty from the presidential election (possible policy shifts), potential El Niño weather event impacting agriculture and regional economic activity (could reduce GDP by ~0.8–1.7% depending on severity), external geopolitical tensions raising energy prices and inflation, possible reversal of pension‑withdrawal related deposit inflows (temporary liquidity), one‑off drivers to asset quality (mining profit‑sharing) that may not persist, and competitive/ regulatory changes in payments (UPI implementation and new entrants).
