Cenovus Energy works across the full chain of oil and gas, from finding and pulling crude, natural gas liquids and natural gas out of the ground to processing and selling them. It is known for its heavy oil and bitumen operations in northern Alberta and Saskatchewan, running projects such as Foster Creek, Christina Lake, Sunrise and Tucker alongside its Lloydminster thermal and conventional heavy oil business.
The company runs its business through six segments. Oil Sands covers bitumen and heavy oil production, while Conventional holds assets in Alberta and British Columbia along with natural gas processing plants. An Offshore segment handles exploration and development. Canadian Manufacturing runs the Lloydminster upgrading and asphalt complex, the Bruderheim rail terminal and two ethanol plants, turning heavy oil into synthetic crude, diesel, asphalt and related goods. U.S. Manufacturing refines crude into diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, asphalt and other products, and Retail sells its own and third-party petroleum products through retail, commercial, bulk and wholesale outlets. Its activities reach across Canada, the United States and the Asia Pacific region.
