Imperial Oil operates in the energy business, locating and pulling crude oil and natural gas from the ground and converting them into fuels and related goods. Among the public, it is best known for the Esso and Mobil fuel stations where everyday drivers fill up.
Its work is split into three parts. One side searches for and produces oil, gas, synthetic crude and bitumen. Another takes that raw material through refining and blending, then gets finished products to market using pipelines, rail cars, ships and trucks, selling through close to 2,400 branded fuel outlets as well as to factories, transport firms, resellers and distributors that supply farms, homes and businesses. A third division makes chemical products like benzene, various solvents, plasticizer components and polyethylene resin. Imperial Oil has also teamed up with E3 Metals Corp on an early-stage lithium project in Alberta.
The company dates back to 1880 and runs its operations from Calgary, Canada, as part of the Exxon Mobil group. Its stock is listed on NYSE Arca under the ticker IMO.
