About Core & Main

Core & Main provides the physical components and support services that go into water, wastewater, storm drainage, and fire protection networks throughout the United States. Its catalog spans pipes, valves, hydrants, and fittings for moving and controlling water, plus storm drainage items like corrugated pipe, retention basins, inline drains, manholes, grates, and geosynthetic materials. On the fire safety side, it carries piping, sprinkler heads, full suppression assemblies, accessories, and custom fabrication work, and it rounds out its lineup with metering equipment, including smart meters, along with installation help and software tools.

Its buyers are largely local government bodies, water utilities in private hands, and contractors building residential, commercial, and public works projects. In effect, the business channels the parts and services that crews rely on to install, upkeep, fix, or swap out infrastructure connected to water delivery and fire suppression.

The company dates back to 1874 and runs its operations from St. Louis, Missouri. Its stock trades on the NYSE under the ticker CNM.

What they said
Core & Main provided a measured review of fiscal 2025 and cautious outlook for fiscal 2026. Management highlighted the company’s leading market position in water infrastructure distribution across 370+ branches, diversified end markets (municipal 44%, nonresidential ~38%, residential ~18%), and growth initiatives (smart meters, treatment plants, fusible HDPE, geosynthetics). Q4 net sales decreased 7% to $1.58 billion (one fewer selling week), but average daily net sales rose ~1% driven by organic volumes. Gross margin expanded 50 bps to 27.1%, driven by private label penetration and disciplined purchasing. Adjusted EBITDA declined ~7% in the quarter. SG&A fell 5% (helped by one fewer selling week and cost actions). Management executed ~$30 million of annualized cost actions (about $6 million realized in FY25, remainder flows through FY26) while continuing targeted investments to drive market share and margin expansion. The company highlighted above-market growth and market share gains, a strong M&A pipeline, record greenfield openings and continued buybacks (ample authorization remaining). Management acknowledged near-term headwinds including residential weakness, PVC price declines, potential fuel/resin inflation due to geopolitical developments, and weather-driven impacts, but emphasized margin initiatives, inventory management, and investments in national teams to capture larger projects.
Guidance
EBITDA guidance of $950 million to $980 million for fiscal 2026 (implying ~2% to 5% EBITDA growth). Management expects pricing to be roughly flat for fiscal 2026 (with potential upside if resin-driven prices rise). Residential end market expected to be down mid-single digits for FY26 (with low-double-digit to mid-teens declines in early quarters), nonresidential expected flattish, municipal steady. Full realization of the $30M cost-out annual run-rate to largely flow through during FY26. Continued M&A activity targeted in the 2%-4% growth range over time. Ongoing share repurchases with ~$600M remaining authorization.
Risks flagged
Near-term headwinds: residential construction softness, PVC price weakness, weather-related disruptions, potential volatility and increases in fuel and global resin prices (linked to geopolitical events), macroeconomic uncertainty affecting demand, choppy M&A market dynamics, and execution risk in scaling new product/service initiatives.
