About United Rentals

United Rentals rents out construction and industrial equipment to a wide range of customers, from contractors and manufacturers to utilities, municipalities, government agencies and homeowners. Its offerings span heavy machinery such as backhoes, skid-steer loaders, earthmovers and forklifts, aerial platforms like boom and scissor lifts, and smaller items including pressure washers and hand tools, making it a recognizable name in equipment rental.

The business runs through two divisions. General Rentals handles the broad equipment lineup described above, while the Specialty division supplies more targeted products such as trench safety systems, power generation and climate control units, fluid handling equipment, and mobile storage or office units, mainly for infrastructure, municipal and industrial projects. Beyond renting, the company sells new equipment, tools, consumables and safety supplies, provides parts and repair services, and moves used equipment through its sales staff, brokers, its site, manufacturer sales and auctions.

United Rentals operates roughly 1,360 rental locations across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Its shares trade on the NYSE under the ticker URI.

Last earnings call, Jul 21, 2026 AI summary

What they said
United Rentals reported strong Q2 2026 results with record total revenue ($4.4B), rental revenue (~$3.8B), adjusted EBITDA (just over $2B) and adjusted EPS ($12.76, +22% YoY). Fleet productivity and time utilization hit record levels, specialty rental revenue grew ~25% YoY across all subsegments, and management raised full-year 2026 guidance and increased planned CapEx for the back half of the year. Management highlighted strong demand driven by large/mega projects (data centers, LNG, infrastructure, semiconductors, power), continued cost discipline (labor, delivery, R&M positive absorption), and progress on restructuring/cost-savings initiatives. Headwinds discussed included variability in ancillary and re-rent revenue, transportation/repositioning costs (fuel-driven), and supply tightness in certain specialty/high-utilization equipment categories. Management expressed confidence in demand continuing into 2027 but did not provide 2027 guidance. Capital allocation remains flexible with a robust M&A pipeline, intention to pursue investment-grade credit rating migration, and ongoing share repurchase/M&A optionality.
Guidance
Management raised 2026 full-year guidance (no specific numeric guidance disclosed in the transcript). They noted they increased planned CapEx for the back half of 2026 (rough cadence ~30-35% in Q3, balance in Q4). They reiterated expectations of flat full-year margins excluding the prior-year H&E impact and reiterated realized restructuring savings of ~$45-50M expected in 2026 (with related charges of $55-65M expected for the year). Management expects continued strong demand into the second half of 2026 and said tailwinds may carry into 2027 but provided no 2027 guidance.
Risks flagged
Risks cited on the call include volatility in fuel and energy prices, variability in ancillary and re-rent revenues, transportation/repositioning cost variability, supply constraints/tightness for certain specialty and high-utilization equipment categories, macroeconomic uncertainties that could affect local market demand (interest rates, housing), and the usual SEC/disclosure safe-harbor risks noted at the start of the call.
