About HealthStream

HealthStream builds digital tools that let hospitals and other healthcare employers train, certify, and manage their staff while also handling the paperwork tied to medical providers. Customers use its systems for things like skills coaching, scheduling, performance tracking, and credential checks, and the company has become known for pairing those staff-training tools with provider-administration software in one place.

Its business splits into two parts. One side, called Workforce Solutions, offers subscription software covering learning modules, competency checks, simulation exercises, and staff evaluations. The other, Provider Solutions, includes products such as VerityStream, EchoCredentialing, MSOW, EchoOneApp, CredentialMyDoc, CredentialStream, and NurseGrid Mobile, which help manage credentialing, privileging, and enrollment for doctors and nurses working in hospitals, clinics, surgery centers, and medical groups. HealthStream sells these systems straight to healthcare providers of all kinds, whether private, nonprofit, or government-run, along with drug and device makers.

The company got its start in 1990 and runs out of Nashville, Tennessee. Its stock trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker HSTM.

What they said
HealthStream reported a strong Q2 2026 with record revenues of $83.7M (up 12.5% YoY) and record adjusted EBITDA of $20.6M (up 16.9% YoY). Operating income grew 41.4% YoY, net income was $6.7M (up 23.8%), and EPS was $0.23. Management increased full-year revenue and adjusted EBITDA expectations but trimmed net income guidance slightly to fund incremental investments (including 15 new hires for its career networks). The quarter included a $2M cumulative catch-up revenue related to a contingent-fee contract from the 2020 ANSOS acquisition; roughly $1.2M was subscription revenue and $0.8M professional services. Core subscription product lines showed organic growth (CredentialStream +14%, ShiftWizard +30%, Competency Suite +12%, myClinicalExchange +29%) while legacy revenue declined (~$7.4M, down 15% YoY). HealthStream highlighted strategic initiatives: bundling strategies (product bundles and market bundles for post-acute/long-term care/critical access), investment in career networks, monetization of Insights/analytics (Insights+ buy-ups), expansion into payer credentialing supported by the Virsys12 acquisition, and standardizing pricing escalators in renewals. The company has a strong balance sheet ($66.7M cash, untapped credit line, no long-term debt) and remains positioned for M&A or capital deployment.
Guidance
Management said they increased expectations for full-year 2026 revenue and adjusted EBITDA but slightly trimmed net income guidance for 2026 due to accelerated investments. No specific numeric full-year target figures were provided on the call; the updated guidance reflects inclusion of the $2M catch-up and the incremental investments.
Risks flagged
- Net income guidance was trimmed due to increased investment spending, which could pressure near-term profitability. - One-time $2M catch-up revenue contributed to Q2 results; similar nonrecurring items may not repeat. - Legacy product revenue is declining (Q2 legacy revenue ~$7.4M, down 15% YoY). - Large deals (payer wins, big bundles) have long sales cycles and can take time to realize revenue. - Some large contract bundles (e.g., resuscitation) carry lower gross margins due to royalties and content costs. - Execution risk as the company scales bundling strategies, market-specific bundles, and new initiatives (career networks, payer credentialing).
