Last earnings call, Jul 28, 2026 AI summary

What they said
CMS Energy's Q2 2026 earnings call reaffirmed the company's long-term strategy emphasizing regulated utility investment, simplified through a planned exit from nonutility renewables development at NorthStar while retaining Michigan-based assets (Dearborn Industrial Generation, a few gas peakers, and four commercial solar projects). Management reported first-half adjusted net income of $464 million ($1.50 per share) and noted year-to-date variances driven primarily by storms and weather. The company articulated a $24 billion utility capital plan and highlighted a $1.7 billion reduction in planned NorthStar capital that will free up parent funding, plus a disclosed $500M+ funding offset from asset disposition and cash flow. Management reaffirmed long-term adjusted EPS growth guidance of 6%-8% and an approximate 3% dividend yield, provided early 2027 guidance with no bias within the range, and discussed upside from potential data center load additions (with a tariff that spreads fixed costs and yields customer bill benefits). Management expressed confidence in regulatory recovery for storm costs (assuming a constructive order) and emphasized improving reliability metrics and operational improvements. Q&A was substantive and management answers were generally confident and direct, addressing asset sales, financing, storm deferral, DIG recontracting timing, and IRP implications.
Guidance
Reaffirmed long-term adjusted EPS growth of 6%-8% compounded annually and approximately 3% dividend yield; early 2027 guidance provided (management stated they are not biasing the range and have incorporated the NorthStar repositioning); $24 billion utility capital plan referenced; 10.5% utility rate base growth referenced; management expects a $500M+ funding offset from capital reallocation and retained asset cash flows; assumptions include constructive regulatory outcome for storm deferral filings. No specific full-year 2027 EPS number disclosed on the call.
Risks flagged
Weather and storm-related costs (recent storms were a primary headwind); regulatory outcomes (storm deferral and other commission approvals) which are assumed to be constructive; zoning/permitting risk and timing for large data center customers; execution risk related to asset dispositions and timing of sales of non-Michigan renewables; potential near-term parent earnings/financing variability as NorthStar is repositioned; possible merchant exposure if DIG recontracting leaves merchant volume.
