About American Electric Power

American Electric Power runs the chain of turning fuel into electricity and getting it to homes and businesses, handling generation, transmission and delivery under one roof. It supplies power directly to everyday customers while also selling in bulk to other utilities, cooperatives that serve rural areas, and local governments. Its plants draw on a wide mix of fuels, among them coal, lignite, natural gas, nuclear, hydro, solar and wind, along with newer forms of generation.

Internally, the company is split into units that separate the different stages of the business: Vertically Integrated Utilities and Transmission and Distribution Utilities handle regional power delivery, AEP Transmission Holdco focuses on the transmission network, and Generation & Marketing covers electricity sales into the broader market. Through these divisions, AEP reaches both individual consumers and large buyers of wholesale power across the country.

The company traces its incorporation back to 1906 and keeps its headquarters in Columbus, Ohio. It trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker AEP.

What they said
American Electric Power (AEP) Q2 2026 earnings call highlighted company progress under new CEO Bill Fehrman, with focus on financial performance, affordability, growth, and regulatory/operational improvements. Reported operating earnings: $1.36/sh in Q2 and $3.01 YTD, slightly below prior-year quarter due to timing items including Transmission Holdco minority interest sale and tax timing; however management raised 2026 guidance to $6.25-$6.55 from $6.15-$6.45. Management emphasized strong regulatory progress, transmission investment, load growth especially in Texas (Batch Zero 45 GW) and West Virginia, potential GenCo structures, securing 13 GW generation and options for additional 10 GW through supplier agreements, and capital plan expansion to be detailed in Q3 update (2027-2031). They discussed PJM challenges around governance, interconnection speed, and resource adequacy and expressed optimism on solutions. Management highlighted $16B of cost offsets across ESAs leading to rate decreases in Indiana and residential decreases in Ohio. Plans to file a base rate decrease in Indiana were mentioned. Key near-term catalysts include Q3 capital plan update, executed documents for Piketon and fuel cell projects, ERCOT/BATCH Zero finalization, and regulatory trackers/settlements (Oklahoma tracker).
Guidance
Raised 2026 full-year operating earnings guidance to $6.25–$6.55 per share (from $6.15–$6.45). Management reiterated targeted FFO to debt ratio of 14%–15% and committed to >9% five-year growth rate (2027–2031) and plans to lay out 2027–2031 capital plan in Q3. No other specific numeric guidance beyond these was provided.
Risks flagged
Risks noted include timing-related comparability issues from prior Transmission Holdco minority interest sale and tax timing items; interconnection and generation availability constraints (e.g., ERCOT Batch Zero finalization, need for additional generation); PJM governance, interconnection speed, and resource adequacy uncertainties; potential regulatory and rate case variability; need for robust capital protection and credit safeguards for large projects, especially new nuclear and GenCo structures. Also noted operational and O&M increases to enhance reliability and potential moves between batches or delays.
