Last earnings call, Feb 20, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Pinnacle West (APS) reported solid operational and financial results for 2025 driven by record demand, strong sales growth, top-quartile reliability and customer satisfaction, and disciplined execution of grid expansion plans. Management highlighted safety excellence, Palo Verde’s 100% summertime capacity factor and an INPO award, and noted AI tools and improvements to customer experience. Financially, Q4 EPS was $0.13 (vs. a $0.06 loss in Q4 2024) and full-year EPS was $5.05, in the upper half of the company’s updated guidance range; year-over-year EPS declined modestly due mainly to milder weather and higher financing, pension/OPEB, D&A and O&M costs but was offset by robust weather-normalized sales growth (6.8% in Q4; 5% for the full year). Management reiterated growth drivers: durable customer growth (2.4% in 2025), a committed 4.5 GW of high load-factor demand, and a much larger uncommitted queue (cited ~20 GW) driven by data centers and TSMC activity. They plan to file an updated 15-year IRP midyear, continue working on a subscription model to move uncommitted load to committed status, and are pursuing a rate case that could establish a formula rate to reduce regulatory lag and create more linear earnings/cost recovery. Credit and financing topics included a HoldCo debt target in the mid-teens (about 17% year-end 2025) and Moody’s-constrained FFO-to-debt thresholds. Management emphasized openness to nontraditional financing sources and customer financing for large transmission/generation projects. Regulatory and program changes were discussed (DSM program condensation), and management characterized new nuclear as a medium-to-long-term opportunity. Overall, the tone was constructive and measured, with confident operational commentary and balanced discussion of near-term headwinds (weather, higher finance/pension costs, regulatory lag) and long-term growth opportunities.
Guidance
- Sales growth: company reiterated a long-term sales growth cadence of roughly 5%–7% annually through 2030 (company also referenced 4%–6% bands in long-term commentary). - HoldCo debt target: mid-teens percentage of total debt (management reported ~17% at year-end 2025 and intends to remain within that bandwidth). - FFO-to-debt / credit: Moody’s threshold noted at 14%; company targeting to maintain above that level (management indicated high-14s on their calculation). - No new specific 2026 EPS or revenue targets were provided on this call beyond previously issued 2026 guidance referenced from the Q3 call.
Risks flagged
- Weather variability materially affects earnings (2025 was milder vs. 2024’s extremely hot summer, causing ~ $0.71 EPS headwind year-over-year). - Higher financing costs, increased pension and OPEB expense, depreciation and amortization, and O&M pressures. - Regulatory risk: rate-case timing and regulatory lag; uncertainty around formula rate approval and rate design changes for high load-factor tariffs. - Execution and capital risk: large capital needs for generation and transmission to serve committed and uncommitted load, supply-chain/trades capacity for any new nuclear, and ability to secure financing (including potential customer-funded or alternative financing). - Customer concentration/uncertainty: reliance on large customers (e.g., TSMC and data centers) where uncommitted volumes may or may not materialize.
