Last earnings call, Aug 4, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Duke Energy reported adjusted EPS of $1.43 for Q2 2026, driven by growth at Electric Utilities and ongoing infrastructure investments. Management reaffirmed 2026 guidance of $6.55-$6.80 and a long-term EPS CAGR target of 5%-7% through 2030, expecting to be in the top half of that range beginning in 2028 as large economic development projects (ESAs) ramp. The company highlighted an industry-leading regulated capital plan (> $1 billion/month), a late-stage pipeline of ~15 GW of large loads (majority in Florida and Indiana), and potential incremental capital of $5-$10 billion within the current 5-year plan tied to those loads. Management emphasized disciplined execution, constructive regulatory settlements (notably in North Carolina), active execution programs for generation builds (standardized sites, EPC use, AI monitoring), and prudent financial management (opportunistic ATM equity, DRIP). They also discussed new nuclear options (AP1000 and SMR) but will not proceed until risk can be meaningfully offset. Weather and higher depreciation/interest expense were noted as earnings drivers/headwinds. Overall tone was confident on execution and growth, while cautious around regulatory affordablity issues in Indiana, negotiation timing for ESAs, and nuclear project risk.
Guidance
Reaffirmed 2026 adjusted EPS guidance of $6.55 to $6.80. Reaffirmed long-term EPS CAGR of 5% to 7% through 2030 and stated confidence in achieving the top half of that range beginning in 2028. Management indicated potential incremental capital of $5 billion to $10 billion for late-stage loads that is expected to be within the current 5-year plan (i.e., roll-forwardable).
Risks flagged
Regulatory and political scrutiny around affordability (notably in Indiana) could affect outcomes; ESA negotiations are complex and timing may be protracted; new nuclear carries financial overrun and supply chain risks and management will not proceed without risk offsets; higher depreciation and interest expense from growing asset base; weather variability can both help and pressure results; potential supply chain, labor, and fuel constraints for generation builds, although management states they have plans in place.
