Xcel Energy handles the full path of electricity, generating and buying power, moving it across transmission lines, and delivering it to homes and businesses. It draws on a mix of sources for generation, including coal, nuclear, natural gas and oil alongside renewables such as hydro, solar, biomass, wood and refuse, and wind. Alongside electricity, it also acquires, transports, stores and sells natural gas, and moves gas owned by its customers through its pipeline network.
The company runs its work through three divisions: a regulated electric utility, a regulated natural gas utility, and a broader segment covering other activities, which includes rental housing investments and sourcing equipment for new renewable power projects. It also builds and leases natural gas infrastructure such as pipelines, storage sites and compression stations. Its customers span residential, commercial and industrial users across parts of Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin, with roughly 3.7 million electric customers and about 2.1 million natural gas customers.
Xcel Energy was founded in 1909 and is headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Its shares are listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker XEL.
