About Greif

Greif designs, builds and sells packaging used in industrial settings, shipping its products and support services to businesses around the world. It is widely recognized for drums made of steel, fiber and plastic, as well as bulk containers, closures, protective shipping gear, water bottles and containers that have been refurbished for reuse. Alongside these goods, the company handles tasks like managing containers through their full lifecycle, filling them, and arranging logistics and storage for clients in chemicals, paints, food and drink, petroleum, coatings, farming, pharmaceuticals and minerals.

Operations fall into three groups. One, covering global industrial packaging, includes the items above and gives special attention to flexible bulk containers used in farming, building and food work. Another, paper packaging and services, turns out containerboard, corrugated sheets and assembled boxes, plus recycled paperboard and fiber, reaching customers tied to packaging, cars, food and construction materials whose cargo spans appliances, groceries, auto parts and furniture. A third unit, land management, oversees timber cutting and regrowth and handles sales of forested and specialty land.

Last earnings call, Jan 31, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Greif's Q1 2026 earnings call showcased solid operating margin expansion and double-digit growth in adjusted EBITDA despite a still muted industrial demand backdrop. Management highlighted a 260 basis point improvement in EBITDA margin year over year, a 24% increase in adjusted EBITDA, and reaffirmed their 2026 guidance. The company emphasized structural cost optimization, strong free cash flow generation, and balance-sheet strength, enabling meaningful capital allocation including share repurchases and capex for growth. The commercial transformation from a “farmer” to a “hunter” approach, ongoing portfolio rationalization, and a disciplined capital deployment strategy (organic growth first, with tuck-in M&A as a secondary option) were highlighted. They noted a still cautious demand environment with some regional and end-market softness (fiber, tubes and cores, metals) but pointed to pockets of improvement in small plastics volumes and select regions. The company introduced and highlighted new barrier technology (SIOC) with orders in early deployment and anticipated broader ramp. The call conveyed modest optimism for volume progression into the back half of 2026, underpinned by cost reduction, capital discipline, and a robust balance sheet.
Guidance
- reaffirmed 2026 guidance with low-end adjusted free cash flow around $315 million and 50% conversion expectations; end-2026 leverage expected well below 2x; run-rate cost optimization of $80-90 million (with $65 million already realized in run-rate). Share repurchases: completed $130M of the planned $150M; incremental $300M authorization for buybacks, with a target of about 2% annual buyback; growth capex to fund organic growth and selective investments; capital allocation favors organic growth, with tuck-in M&A as a secondary, disciplined option.
Risks flagged
- Muted demand environment across multiple end-markets (fiber, chemicals, metals) with ongoing macro headwinds; housing market softness and residential remodeling activity; commodity price volatility (URB, OCC) and pass-through timing; ongoing inflationary pressures affecting costs; supply chain and manufacturing cost dynamics; volatile energy and freight costs; execution risk on transformational initiatives and the commercial restructuring (hunter vs farmer).
