About FirstEnergy

FirstEnergy operates as a power utility whose subsidiaries handle everything from producing electricity to delivering it into homes and businesses throughout parts of the United States. The company draws on several fuel types, including coal, nuclear, hydro, natural gas, wind, and solar, to keep its generation mix varied. It has become known for the sheer reach of its wires, with a network of transmission lines and an even larger web of local distribution lines carrying power to customers.

Its business splits into two regulated functions: one covers the distribution of electricity to end users, and the other covers the transmission lines that move power across longer distances. Through this structure, FirstEnergy reaches around six million customers spread across Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and New York.

The company traces its founding to 1996 and keeps its headquarters in Akron, Ohio. Its stock is listed on the NYSE under the ticker FE.

Last earnings call, Jul 28, 2026 AI summary

What they said
FirstEnergy's Q2 2026 earnings call emphasized execution against its multi-year plan, stable near-term financial performance, and material growth opportunities driven primarily by accelerating data center demand. Management reaffirmed its 2026 capital investment plan ($6 billion), its core earnings guidance ($2.62 to $2.82 per share for 2026), and its broader $36 billion five-year capital plan with targeted core earnings growth of ~6%–8% through 2030. Results were described as in line with plan: GAAP and core earnings were roughly flat year-over-year on a per-share basis for the quarter, and consolidated ROE of 9.5% was in line with targets. Management highlighted significant incremental contracted data center demand (6.4 GW contracted, a 30% increase in total forecasted demand since Q1) and near-term pipeline activity (management expects ~1.5 GW to contract imminently). They discussed regulatory work in New Jersey, West Virginia CPCN for Maidsville Energy Center, PJM transmission planning and open-window opportunities, and financing approach for incremental capital. Overall tone was constructive and confident, with repeated emphasis on disciplined execution, regulatory engagement, and the commercial opportunity presented by data center and transmission projects.
Guidance
Reaffirmed 2026 core earnings guidance of $2.62 to $2.82 per share; reaffirmed 2026 $6 billion capital investment plan; reaffirmed $36 billion 5-year capital investment plan and core earnings growth near the top end of 6%–8% through 2030. Management also indicated expectations for additional contracted data center load (~1.5 GW expected in the next couple of weeks) and referenced that incremental CapEx from approved projects (e.g., Maidsville) would be treated as incremental to the current $36 billion plan.
Risks flagged
Regulatory and political risk (potential changes to rate design, ROE, PBR/phase-in approaches in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland); need for approvals (CPCN in West Virginia, PJM/FERC filings and approvals for interconnection and reliability backstop); timing risk for converting pipeline data center demand into fully contracted, energized load; capital and financing risk if incremental CapEx materializes (management expects 30%–40% incremental equity on incremental CapEx, but outcomes may vary).
