ENI is an energy business that searches for, develops, and pulls crude oil and natural gas out of the ground for use around the world. Beyond that upstream work, it turns fuels into refined products and chemicals, and it supplies gas and electricity directly to homes and businesses, which is a large part of how people encounter the company day to day.
Its activities are split into separate divisions. One handles the hunt for oil, condensates, and gas along with output from those fields, and it also runs forest protection projects and carbon storage efforts. Another division buys and moves natural gas, including through pipelines and cross-border transport, and trades in liquefied natural gas. A further segment takes care of turning crude into fuels and chemical goods and getting them to market. There is also a unit, once called Eni gas e luce and now known as Plenitude and Power, that sells gas and power to retail customers while generating electricity from both fossil-fuel plants and renewable sources.
The company traces back to 1953 and runs its head office out of Rome, Italy. Its stock trades under the ticker E.
