What they said
WesBanco reported a strong second quarter 2026 driven by broad-based commercial loan growth, record loan production and an expanding commercial pipeline. Management emphasized momentum across the franchise: total portfolio loans increased 3.5% year-over-year (4.5% adjusted for CRE payoffs), sequential annualized loan growth of 8.3%, record commercial production (~$2.5 billion YTD) and a $2.3 billion commercial pipeline. Financial metrics were solid: GAAP net income of $88 million ($0.91) and adjusted EPS of $0.92, pre-tax, pre-provision earnings up 24% (year-to-date) and an efficiency ratio at a record low 51%. Credit quality was described as benign with low charge-offs and an allowance for credit losses of 1.12% of loans. Management reiterated capital strength (CET1 10.7%), executed share repurchases (~300k shares), and described disciplined expense and investment plans supporting expansion (notably South Florida). They highlighted fee income strength (record fees, trust and brokerage assets near $11 billion) and expect margins to remain around 3.60% for the remainder of 2026. Key strategic initiatives include expanding commercial/treasury operations in Florida and other targeted markets (Naples, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Nashville LPO), continued branch optimization, and a focus on organic growth rather than M&A.
Guidance
Mid-single digit loan growth for full-year 2026 (management expects to outgrow payoffs); Third-quarter payoffs expected to be roughly two-thirds of Q2 levels with payoffs tapering thereafter; Net interest margin expected to be approximately 3.60% for the remainder of 2026; Quarterly fee income growth expected in the 3%-5% year-over-year range for the remainder of 2026; Gross commercial swap fee income (ex-market adjustments) expected in the $8M-$10M range; Quarterly expense run rate expected to be ~ $153 million for Q3 and Q4; Marketing expected ~ $5 million per quarter; CET1 ratio anticipated to remain near ~10.7% through the remainder of 2026; One Fed rate hike currently anticipated late in Q4 with no meaningful impact to 2026 results; Full-year effective tax rate ~21%; Tangible book value per share accretion modeled at ~$0.70-$0.80 per quarter.
Risks flagged
Elevated CRE payoffs (about $345M in Q2 and >$1.3B over last 12 months) that created a headwind to loan growth; ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty that will influence provision for credit losses and could affect charge-offs, delinquencies and prepayment speeds; potential need for higher-cost wholesale funding if deposit growth lags loan growth (could pressure margins); competition for loans and deposits and deposit mix/attrition risk related to branch closures; sensitivity to interest rate moves and market conditions that affect fee businesses (trust, brokerage) and swap fees.
