About MaxLinear

MaxLinear builds chips that pack many pieces of a communications system onto one device, blending radio frequency circuitry, high-performance analog and mixed-signal parts, digital signal processing, security functions, compression tools, networking layers and power management. These components end up inside equipment like radio transceivers and modems used for 4G and 5G base stations and backhaul, optical transceivers, home networking gear such as wi-fi and wired routers, and broadband modems built for cable data standards, fiber-optic protocols and digital subscriber lines, along with power management and interface parts sold on their own.

Its customer base spans distributors of electronics, companies that build networking modules, and manufacturers that design or produce equipment under their own or other brands, reached through a combination of an internal sales team, outside sales agents and distributor partners. The company also runs joint development efforts with other firms, working alongside Edgecore Networks on infrastructure gear aimed at enterprise and small business markets, and teaming with GCT Semiconductor on gateway products for 5G fixed wireless access serving both households and businesses.

Founded in 2003, MaxLinear runs its operations from Carlsbad, California, and its stock is listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker MXL.

Last earnings call, Jul 23, 2026 AI summary

What they said
MaxLinear reported strong Q2 2026 results, highlighting a 55% year-over-year revenue increase to $168.8 million, sequential revenue growth of 23%, and a return to GAAP profitability with EPS of $0.02 (non-GAAP EPS $0.35). Infrastructure is now the largest revenue category (~$85M) and grew 145% YoY, driven by 400G/800G optical PAM4 ramps (Keystone family) and improving order visibility. Management raised 2026 optical data center revenue expectations to $210–$230 million and expects continued growth into 2027. Q3 2026 non-GAAP gross margin is guided to ~60% at midpoint. Management emphasized product road map strength (Keystone ramping now; Rushmore 1.6T sampling and expected to contribute starting 2027), broadening product family (TIAs, drivers, active electrical cables, storage accelerators), and constructive relationships with foundry/OSAT partners. The call included discussion of wafer prepayments and increased purchase obligations to secure capacity, some near-term input cost and packaging/test cost pressure, and expectations for continued improvements in margins and operating leverage.
Guidance
Raised optical data center revenue guidance for 2026 to $210 million–$230 million. Q3 2026 non-GAAP gross margin guidance midpoint ~60%. Management indicated Rushmore revenue to begin in 2027 with ramps into 2028–2029. No specific Q3 revenue number given on the call in these segments; management said they provided Q3 guidance for revenue, margins, operating expenses and other items but did not read a Q3 revenue figure on the transcript.
Risks flagged
Supply-side constraints and lead times (tight wafer supply) and associated wafer prepayments/purchase obligations; rising input costs including wafer, packaging, and test that could pressure margins; long qualification and interoperability cycles for higher-speed products; competitive pressure from multiple large incumbents; potential customer concentration as optical ramps could lead to a small number of large customers accounting for a larger share of volumes; macro/telco capex variability.
