AI summary

Honda Motor closes at $32.20, down 1% on the day but sitting above both its 50-day average of $30.85 and its 200-day average of $28.43, with the shorter average above the longer one. The GekkoIndex reads 57.4, placing the stock in the Neutral zone. Against this, Gekko Fair Value stands at $51.67, leaving price 37.7% below that level.

This week's news centers on Honda's investment, through Honda Xcelerator Ventures, in Niron Magnetics, a US-based developer of rare-earth-free iron nitride permanent magnets, aimed at reducing dependence on rare earth materials for electrified vehicle powertrains. Analyst views have diverged: Wall Street Zen upgraded the stock to a "Moderate Buy" consensus with a $34.00 average price target, while a separate report cites an average "Hold" rating with a $25.00 twelve-month target. A comparison piece also weighs Honda against Ford on hybrids, EV investment, motorcycles and recurring revenue as themes shaping 2026 growth prospects.

Looking ahead, the next earnings date falls on 6 November 2026, 47 days out and beyond a typical 20-trading-day holding window. Honda's last report, on 5 August 2026, showed EPS of $2.18 with a 2% reaction, and the company posted 3 beats across 7 quarters, with an average absolute reaction of 3.6%. Seasonality over this calendar stretch has averaged -5.4% across 5 years, rising in just 1 of them, a pattern worth noting alongside the current consensus target of $29.60.

Last earnings call, Aug 5, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Honda reported record consolidated operating profit of JPY 530.7 billion for the fiscal first quarter ended June 30, 2026. Key drivers were strong Motorcycle performance (all-time high quarterly operating profit, driven by India and Brazil), solid Automobile results in North America (automotive operating profit JPY 192.1 billion, margin 5.0%), and favorable foreign exchange and tariff impacts. No EV-related losses were recorded in Q1; EV-related losses for the full year were maintained at JPY 500 billion at the start of the year and revised to JPY 520 billion to reflect exchange-rate changes. Management revised the consolidated operating profit forecast upward by JPY 150 billion to JPY 650 billion and updated the exchange-rate assumption to JPY 155/USD. Production was disrupted by the July 28, 2026 Kumamoto earthquake, with temporary suspensions at multiple domestic plants and parts shortages from suppliers; management is monitoring supplier recovery and possible alternative sourcing. Management detailed ongoing supplier negotiations related to North America EV strategy and compensation; timing and amounts of EV-related loss recognition remain uncertain and may be booked stepwise as negotiations progress. Other topics included China’s weak ICE/hybrid market and model transition, semiconductor supply/cost pressures (memory cost increases factored into guidance), and contingency planning for earthquake-related supply disruptions. Overall tone: upbeat on reported results and guidance uplift but cautious around EV-loss realization, China market weakness, semiconductor costs, earthquake recovery, and FX volatility.
Guidance
Revised consolidated operating profit forecast for fiscal year ending March 31, 2027: increased by JPY 150 billion to JPY 650 billion. Exchange-rate assumption revised to JPY 155 per USD. EV-related losses for the fiscal year: JPY 520 billion (reflecting foreign exchange impact; originally JPY 500 billion). Unit-sales and other full-year sales forecasts were generally maintained (no broad downward revision announced). Semiconductor-related additional cost of JPY 20-30 billion was already factored into the forecast.
Risks flagged
Kumamoto earthquake causing production suspensions and supplier damage leading to parts shortages and uncertain restart timing; ongoing, uncertain EV-related losses tied to supplier compensation negotiations (timing and amounts unknown); continued weakness in the Chinese ICE/hybrid market and model transition risk in China; semiconductor supply and rising memory costs (additional JPY 20-30 billion factored); foreign exchange volatility (sensitivity ~ JPY 10-12 billion per JPY1 movement) which can both help and hurt (especially U.S.-denominated EV supplier payments); geopolitical uncertainty (Middle East) potentially impacting unit sales and material inflation.
