What they said
Fluor reported solid Q2 2026 results highlighted by $4.3 billion revenue (up 9% year-over-year), adjusted EBITDA of $149 million (vs. $96 million last year), and adjusted EPS of $0.91 (vs. $0.43). New awards in the quarter exceeded $6 billion, growing backlog to ~$26.9 billion and supporting a book-to-bill above 1 for the year. Management emphasized diversification across end markets (nuclear fuels, fertilizers, copper, midstream, data centers, and power), front-end work translating into EPC awards, and continued wind-down of legacy projects (remaining legacy backlog ~$120 million). The company closed on a JV divestiture in Mexico (removing ~$650 million of backlog), has about $3.0 billion in cash, and signaled continued share repurchases and selective M&A interest in asset-light targets. Management iterated a cautious but constructive outlook: updated 2026 guidance (qualitative) was provided with an EBITDA bridge showing pull-through effects from Q2 awards and closeouts, and a $90 million pretax gain from the sale (not included in guidance). During Q&A, analysts asked about normalized margins, timing and margins of new awards (e.g., Centrus), status of legacy mining project and scope changes, the $30 billion mining and metals pipeline, and backlog conversion dynamics. Management was generally confident, noting improving margins on new awards, predominantly reimbursable contract mix, and that much of the second-half EBITDA is expected to come from existing backlog, while acknowledging ongoing risks related to scope negotiations, permitting, escalation and supply chain.
Guidance
Management provided updated 2026 guidance qualitatively: an updated EBITDA guide (range not specified in the transcript) that implies a modest step-up in the second half, with the majority of expected H2 EBITDA already residing in current backlog. They noted capital returns expected in H2 and clarified that a $90 million pretax gain from the sale is outside/excluded from the guide. Management believes book-to-bill will be well above 1 for the year and that new awards will contribute meaningfully in 2027 and beyond.
Risks flagged
Risks cited include remaining legacy project exposures (e.g., Gordie Howe additional $44 million losses noted), potential scope-change negotiations on the mining project that could affect timing and schedule, regulatory and permitting hurdles for mining/metals projects, supply chain disruption and escalation risk, and typical execution/contract risks on lump-sum work. Management also noted they preemptively removed JV backlog related to the divestiture, indicating portfolio composition risk.
