What they said
Cabot reports Q1 FY2026 results with adjusted EPS of $1.53, facing a mixed demand backdrop. Reinforcement Materials EBIT declined due to lower volumes, while Performance Chemicals benefited from a favorable product mix and momentum in Battery Materials. The company highlighted strong cash flow and liquidity, ongoing capex discipline, and a multiyear supply agreement with PowerCo. Management narrowed full-year adjusted EPS guidance to $6.00-$6.50, expecting relatively flat Reinforcement Materials volumes with regional nuances (Europe down in 2026) and continued growth in Battery Materials. The Mexico plant acquisition and Bridgestone partnership are positioned as strategic assets. The call also discusses imports in tires, trade/tariff considerations, and cross-regional product movements, with a cautiously optimistic view on demand improvements over the medium term.
Guidance
Narrowed FY2026 adjusted EPS guidance to $6.00-$6.50. Reinforcement Materials volumes expected to be relatively flat year-over-year, with potential Europe volume declines; Performance Chemicals expected low single-digit volume growth driven by Battery Materials; capex expected to be $200-$230 million in fiscal 2026; strong free cash flow and balance-sheet strength enabling asset maintenance, growth investments, and shareholder returns.
Risks flagged
Challenging global demand environment, particularly in Reinforcement Materials; lower tire production and delayed replacement cycles; tariff and trade tensions impacting imports above or across regions; competitive intensity in Asia Pacific; ongoing effects of Dow's silanes closure in Europe; regulatory and currency risks; volatility in end-market demand for Battery Materials and energy storage applications.
