Last earnings call, Jul 30, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Eastman's Q2 2026 earnings call focused on solid execution across segments with volume and mix strength in Advanced Materials, resilient margins in Additives & Functional Products (AFP), and higher-than-normal volumes in Chemical Intermediates due to fewer shutdowns versus last year. Management emphasized Renew (circular/rPET) growth (over $100M revenue increase year-over-year), capacity ramp challenges in rPET, and maintaining price discipline to offset raw material and energy cost inflation. They noted several planned and executed turnarounds (notably the Kingsport coal gasifier) that created sequential headwinds in Q2 but will not repeat. Management reiterated confidence in back-half earnings growth, described ongoing cost reduction targets ($125–$150M net of inflation), and discussed M&A discipline and capital allocation. They provided operational details about utilization, inventory management, and working capital movements and were cautiously optimistic about demand given a weak macro environment and geopolitical uncertainty (Middle East).
Guidance
Management provided qualitative forward-looking guidance: Q3 volumes expected to be similar sequentially to Q2 (i.e., flat vs. Q2, but materially higher year-over-year); not expecting improvement in weak discretionary end markets in the back half; Renew (circular/rPET) expected to contribute >$100M of incremental sales this year (with Q4 as the strongest quarter for that contribution); company remains on track for first Renew asset to reach $200M EBITDA long-term (timeline extended by weaker economy); cost reduction targets of $125M–$150M net of inflation (to be delivered across the year and into 2027 to offset inflation); expectation of higher utilization in the back half and a sequential headwind from turnarounds of ~$10–$20M versus an initial expectation of ~$30M benefit.
Risks flagged
Weak consumer and discretionary end markets (auto, B&C, consumer durables, textiles); potential demand softness and customer discipline/holding inventory; volatility in commodity spreads and export markets; Middle East geopolitical conflict creating uncertainty for freight, supply chains and demand; capacity constraints and ramp-up challenges in rPET/polymer lines; working capital and receivables pressure; slowdown in specialty demand could prolong margin or revenue ramp timelines.
