Last earnings call, Jul 29, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Strategic Education reported a solid Q2 2026 with consolidated revenue up ~3% to $330M, operating income up 9% to $53M, adjusted EPS up 16% to $1.76, and YTD operating cash flow up 18% to $117M. Excluding a one-time $13M labor-related charge in Australia, operating income would have grown 35% and margin would have expanded to ~20%. The Education Technology Services (ETS) division showed strong performance (revenue +15%, operating income +30%), with Sophia Learning subscribers up 32% and Workforce Edge corporate agreements continuing to scale. U.S. Higher Education showed stable-to-healthy demand with employer-affiliated enrollment growth while unaffiliated enrollment is not a current marketing focus. Australia/New Zealand showed healthy domestic growth but headwinds from slower visa approvals and weaker international/onshore transfer market. Management emphasized margin improvement (targeting ~200 bps EBIT expansion over this year and next), expects revenue growth to revert to ~5% over the next year, and anticipates returning Australia to growth in 2027. The company is investing in academic integrity and platform improvements (notably at Sophia) and has plans to mitigate potential ongoing grading costs should the Australia appeal be resolved unfavorably.
Guidance
Management guidance/forward-looking statements: - Full-year revenue per student expected to be roughly flat. - Company expects revenue growth to revert to ~5% over the next year (anchor of notional model). - Confident in achieving approximately 200 basis points of adjusted EBIT margin expansion over this year and next (potentially including the Australia charge). - Expects to hear whether the Australia High Court will take the appeal in Sept/early Oct; Australia business expected to return to growth in 2027.
Risks flagged
Key risks highlighted on the call: - A one-time $13.7M Fair Work Order (labor) charge in Australia and ongoing appellate uncertainty; potential grading costs could remain part of cost base depending on appeal outcome. - Slow visa approvals in Australia reducing international enrollment and onshore transfers, creating near-term headwinds for ANZ enrollment and revenue. - Academic integrity/AI-related concerns (e.g., student misuse of AI in Sophia courses) and the need for ongoing investments to address quality of assessments. - Shifts in student acquisition mix (reduced unaffiliated enrollment emphasis) and potential impacts from LLM-driven search behavior (management has not identified a material impact but is monitoring).
