Southern Copper extracts and processes copper along with related minerals such as molybdenum, zinc, silver, gold, and lead. Its work spans the full production chain, from mining and ore concentration through smelting and refining into finished copper cathodes, rods, and other materials. The company runs mining and processing operations across Mexico, Peru, and other American countries, including open-pit mines, underground mines, concentrators, smelters, and refineries.
Its principal sites include the Toquepala and Cuajone mines with an associated smelter and refinery in Peru, and the La Caridad and Buenavista mines in Mexico, which are supported by concentrators and SX-EW plants. Beyond copper, the company also mines coal and operates a zinc refinery, and it holds substantial land concessions for mining and exploration in Peru, Mexico, Argentina, and Chile. It functions as a subsidiary of Americas Mining Corporation.
Southern Copper traces its incorporation back to 1952 and previously operated under the name Southern Peru Copper Corp. before adopting its current name in 1996. It is headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, and its shares trade on the NYSE under the ticker SCCO.
