Freeport-McMoRan dominated headlines this week with board approval of a $4.5 billion expansion at its Bagdad copper and molybdenum operation in Arizona, aimed at more than doubling mining and milling rates and positioning the site as the second-largest copper mine in the U.S., with annual production targeted toward 5 billion pounds company-wide. The move follows a Q3 report in which copper sales rose for a third straight quarter and consolidated net income climbed over 80% year-over-year, with Grasberg reaching 67% ramp-up. Separate commentary noted 2027 copper sales volumes are expected to grow over 20%, alongside new leaching additives showing improved lab recoveries.
