What they said
Lear reported a solid Q2 2026 with revenue of $6.2 billion (up 3% YoY) and record first-half revenue above $12 billion. Core operating earnings were $313 million (up 7% YoY) and adjusted EPS rose to $4.28 (up 23% YoY). Operating cash flow increased 55% to $461 million and free cash flow increased 69% to $288 million. The company highlighted strong business awards (~$2.9 billion YTD), notable Seating wins (including multiple Audi programs) and continued progress on its strategic initiatives (Idea by Lear, automation, and acquisitions that lower capital costs). Management emphasized a robust 2029 backlog and expects to return to above-market growth in 2028–2029, while noting near-term headwinds, chiefly persistent weakness in China and some tariff/recovery timing impacts. They provided a Q3 revenue/margin frame and reiterated continued capital discipline and steady CapEx intensity with increased investment in automation offset by efficiencies from prior acquisitions.
Guidance
Q3 2026: revenues expected ~$5.8B–$5.9B; Seating margins expected in the low- to mid-6% range; E-Systems margins expected in the low-4% range. Management signaled limited organic growth in 2027 (despite >$700M backlog) with a return to above-market growth (~3–4 pts above market) in 2028–2029. Company plans to provide a three-year backlog and initial 2027 guidance in Q4/early 2027. (No full-year numeric range explicitly disclosed in the transcript beyond Q3 framing.)
Risks flagged
Notable risks discussed include persistent and material weakness in the China market (domestic sales down ~20% through H1), a mechanical revenue impact from tariffs (~$40M year-over-year revenue impact), commodity volatility (e.g., copper inventory impacts), potential margin pressure from seasonal production and major launches (GM launch impacting Q3), share shifts from traditional OEMs to Chinese automakers and localization/export risks, and the usual execution risks around ramping large programs and converting backlog into production.
