What they said
Cummins reported strong second quarter 2026 results, including record quarterly sales of $9.5 billion (up 9% year-over-year) and EBITDA of $1.7 billion. Management highlighted major commercial wins and strategic initiatives: raised 2030 financial targets at Analyst Day, expanded data center and power generation presence with a multiyear hyperscaler agreement and a project with Circe Energy, and announced capacity expansions and development of a 130-liter natural gas genset. The Board approved a 10% increase in the quarterly cash dividend. Management raised the full-year forecast and expects stronger second-half performance, driven by robust demand in power generation (notably in China and for data centers), improving parts demand, and continued growth in North America. They discussed the EPA 2027 proposed rule and a phased/staggered transition that management believes will smooth the new-platform ramp and reduce abrupt demand shifts. Margin drivers include higher volumes, JV earnings, positive pricing, and continued pricing for new product value, offset partially by tariffs, incentive compensation, and elevated warranty/R&D during new-product launches. Management acknowledged capacity constraints in large gensets and some near-term distortions from incentive compensation that will normalize in H2. They expect warranty accruals to tick up with new platform launches but to normalize over time. The tone was confident and constructive, with candid discussion of risks and operational challenges.
Guidance
Raised full-year forecast (compared to prior three-month outlook). Management expects stronger EBITDA percent in H2 (Q3 and Q4) and margin expansion versus H1. Board increased quarterly cash dividend by 10%. Power Systems growth target range increased (discussed as 15%-25% upside expectation historically referenced). Incentive compensation will likely reset next year (Mark indicated next-year incentive comp could be in the order of ~$200 million) and Q3/Q4 incentive expense expected to be about $25M/quarter lower than Q2. Management declined to give specific 2027 numeric guidance but characterized 2027 demand as likely moderated vs. 2026 but smoother due to phased implementation of EPA rule.
Risks flagged
Regulatory uncertainty related to EPA 2027 rulemaking and details of nonconforming penalties/credit mechanics; capacity constraints in large gensets (could limit near-term revenue capture); elevated warranty accruals and R&D/product coverage costs during platform transitions; supply chain and ramp risks as production scales; potential margin pressure if pricing or credit dynamics change; tariffs (noted as immaterial to Q2 but a factor); possible customer prebuy dynamics adding volatility.
