About Kinder Morgan

Kinder Morgan builds and runs the pipelines and storage sites that move energy across North America. It handles natural gas, refined petroleum products, crude oil, and carbon dioxide, moving these commodities for use in fuel, power, and industrial processes. The company is widely recognized for the sheer scale of its pipeline and terminal network, which spans roughly 83,000 miles of pipe and 143 terminal sites.

The business is split into four segments. Natural Gas Pipelines covers interstate and intrastate gas lines, storage, gathering, processing, and liquefaction and storage facilities for liquefied natural gas. Products Pipelines carries refined fuels, crude oil, and condensate along with related terminals. Terminals stores and handles goods such as gasoline, diesel, chemicals, ethanol, metals, and petroleum coke, and also owns tankers. The CO2 segment produces, transports, and markets carbon dioxide, mainly for enhanced oil recovery, and includes interests in oil fields, gas processing plants, a West Texas crude pipeline, and renewable natural gas and LNG facilities.

Kinder Morgan traces back to 1936 and was originally named Kinder Morgan Holdco LLC before taking its current name in February 2011. It is headquartered in Houston, Texas, and its shares are listed on the NYSE under the ticker KMI.

What they said
Kinder Morgan reported a strong second quarter 2026: record net income and adjusted EBITDA, with broad-based segment contributions. Adjusted EBITDA increased 12% year-over-year and adjusted EPS increased 32% year-over-year. Management raised full-year guidance, now expecting adjusted EBITDA at least 5% above the original 2026 budget and adjusted EPS at least 12% above budget. The company declared a quarterly dividend increase (to $0.2975). Growth capital backlog remains robust (roughly $9.6–10 billion shadow backlog), with nearly $400 million of board-contingent projects close to contract execution and an opportunity set exceeding $10 billion. Major natural gas expansion projects (Mississippi Crossing, South System Expansion 4, Trident) are on schedule and on budget; other potential large projects (Permian Link, TGP Project 219 South, Western Gateway) are in advanced negotiation or open season phases. Management emphasized ability to fund new projects largely with internally generated cash while maintaining targeted leverage (currently ~3.6x), and noted flexibility to increase leverage if needed. Management was confident about project pipeline and market demand (LNG, power generation, data centers), while noting competition, supply-chain timing pressures, and some components of earlier quarter outperformance were driven by transitory factors (winter storm, commodity price effects).
Guidance
Company increased full-year guidance: now expects adjusted EBITDA at least 5% above the 2026 budget and adjusted adjusted EPS at least 12% above the original budget. Declared quarterly dividend $0.2975 ($1.19 annualized), up 2% vs 2025. Growth CapEx run-rate guidance: roughly $3 billion per year based on current backlog, with capacity to fund incremental CapEx and potentially increase leverage toward ~4.0x if needed (~$3.4 billion capacity to reach 4x from 3.6x). Expected near-term FIDs: Western Gateway targeted within 1–2 months (contingent on contracts); Permian Link targeted in-service ~2030 if contracted. Management expects to add significant projects to backlog in H2 2026 and potentially sanction >$1 billion of projects.
Risks flagged
Competition for projects (other pipeline proposals such as Boardwalk/Borealis), timing and execution risk for large projects (permitting, partner agreements), supply chain pressures (compression and long-lead equipment timelines), commodity price volatility (which materially affected recent results but is outside company control), contract signing risk (several projects 'on the lip' pending signatures), and potential leverage increase if capex materially exceeds internally generated cash flow.
