About Waste Connections

Waste Connections handles non-hazardous waste across the United States and Canada, covering collection, transfer, disposal and recovery of materials. It works with households, businesses, municipalities, industrial sites, and oil and gas exploration and production operations, and it is known for combining everyday waste collection with specialized handling of drilling and production byproducts such as fluids, cuttings and contaminated soils.

Its operations run through landfills that take in waste for final disposal, transfer stations that consolidate and move material by truck, rail or barge, and recycling facilities that process items like paper, plastics, glass, compostables and metals. In the Pacific Northwest it also runs intermodal services, moving cargo and waste containers by rail. On top of these core services, the company leases equipment to its customer base, which spans residential, commercial, municipal, industrial and energy-sector clients.

Waste Connections was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Woodbridge, Canada. Its shares are listed on the NYSE under the ticker WCN.

Last earnings call, Jul 22, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Waste Connections reported strong Q2 2026 results with revenue of $2.562 billion and adjusted EBITDA of $840.1 million, both ahead of expectations. Management highlighted over 6% growth in revenue and EBITDA year-over-year, adjusted EBITDA margin expansion to 32.8% (70 bps underlying expansion), and solid organic core pricing (~5.6% core price, total price 6.7%) that outpaced expectations. Volumes were down ~1.9% due to macroeconomic uncertainty and a rapid spike in fuel costs that increased churn and paused some construction-related activity. Management raised its full-year 2026 outlook and emphasized drivers including improved employee retention, record safety performance, AI investments (pricing, routing, customer service), and ongoing M&A. Key capital items include RNG spend (about $75 million this year), Chiquita Canyon closure cash outflows guidance of $100–$150 million in 2026, opportunistic land purchases, and ordinary course CapEx in fleet and landfills. Management reiterated expectations for continued margin expansion (50–70 bps for solid waste) and projected double-digit adjusted free cash flow per share growth in 2026 with an expectation of further improvement in 2027 as RNG and Chiquita spending abate.
Guidance
Increased full-year 2026 outlook (company did not provide a single consolidated numeric EPS or revenue target on the call). Specific forward-looking items disclosed: full-year core price expected at or above 5.5%; maintained underlying solid waste margin expansion expectation of 50–70 basis points; expect to fully recover higher fuel costs over time via surcharges; acquisition rollover contribution to 2027 about $30 million (incremental contribution included ~$50 million to 2026 outlook); Chiquita Canyon cash outflows guidance of $100–$150 million in 2026 (stepping down in 2027 and 2028); RNG-related capital spend of ~$75 million in 2026 with remaining spend in 2027 de minimis; expect double-digit adjusted free cash flow per share growth in 2026 and similar momentum into 2027; normalized free cash flow conversion expected in the 48–50% range once lumpy items abate; AI investments of ~$100 million across programs targeting ~ $100 million EBITDA improvement by 2028–2029 (pricing AI ~ $20M run-rate already realized; routing AI expected $40–50M by 2028–29; customer-facing AI ~$20–35M).
Risks flagged
Fuel price volatility and related surcharge timing/impact; lower commodity values versus prior year; macroeconomic/geopolitical uncertainty and demand softness (construction, industrial activity) that depress volumes; increased churn driven by customer price sensitivity to surcharges; regulatory risks including PFAS related leachate treatment requirements; Chiquita Canyon closure cash outflows and related accounting/impairments; interest-rate and macro impacts on M&A and volume demand; timing risk on M&A closings; lumpy capital projects (RNG, landfill development) and execution risk on AI projects; reliance on non-GAAP measures and forward-looking assumptions.
