About Seadrill

Seadrill provides contract drilling services to companies that explore for and produce oil and gas offshore. Its work is carried out through a mix of drillships, semi-submersible rigs, and jack-up rigs, equipment built to operate in conditions ranging from shallow water to ultra-deep sea, and from calm to harsh settings. The company is perhaps most recognized for this range of rig types suited to difficult offshore environments.

The business is structured around three segments: Harsh Environment, Floaters, and Jack-up Rigs. Alongside operating its own rigs, Seadrill also provides operational support and management services to other companies, both affiliated and independent. Its customers include large international oil companies, national oil companies owned by governments, and independent oil and gas producers.

Seadrill was founded in 2005 and is headquartered in London, United Kingdom. Its shares are listed on the NYSE under the ticker SDRL.

What they said
Seadrill reported a strong second quarter 2026 with adjusted EBITDA of $144 million and total operating revenues of $449 million, driven by higher operating days and improving average day rates. Management highlighted successful operational execution (96% economic utilization), completion of the West Tellus reacceptance, and the return of West Capella and West Jupiter to full-quarter operations. The company raised full-year 2026 revenue and EBITDA guidance for the second time this year and expects meaningful free cash flow generation in the second half of 2026. Management resumed opportunistic share repurchases ($20 million in Q2) and executed a refinancing in June that improved the cash position. Commercial strategy emphasizes disciplined contracting focused on full contract economics (day rate, mobilization fees, terms and conditions) and minimizing gaps between contracts. Management expressed confidence in improving demand and tightening supply for high-spec floaters, expecting utilization to continue rising (drillship utilization potentially mid-90s by next year) and leading-edge day rates to move into the mid-to-high $400ks as utilization tightens. They noted inflationary pressures (labor, materials, fuel) and a working capital build tied to rigs beginning new contracts, and flagged substantial reactivation costs for stacked harsh-environment semis (~$100M+ each).
Guidance
Management raised full-year 2026 revenue and adjusted EBITDA guidance (this is the second guidance increase in 2026). They also expect meaningful free cash flow in H2 2026 and see drillship utilization potentially reaching mid-90s next year. Specific quarter figures referenced: Q2 operating revenues $449 million and adjusted EBITDA $144 million. Management expects a $40 million mobilization receipt from Petrobras in Q3.
Risks flagged
Inflationary pressures on labor, materials and fuel; working capital build associated with new contract startups; client payment timing and mobilization timing; significant reactivation costs (> $100M) for stacked harsh-environment semis; potential near-term oversupply in some regions (e.g., U.S. Gulf) and uncertainty about customer behavior (limited evidence of widespread rate-locking). Standard forward-looking statement risks apply.
