About Patterson-UTI Energy

Patterson-UTI Energy supplies onshore contract drilling for companies that explore for and produce oil and natural gas, working across the United States as well as select international markets. It is recognized for operating land-based drilling rigs used in major domestic basins, supporting the wellsite operations its customers rely on to bring hydrocarbons out of the ground.

The company runs through three main lines of business. One handles contract drilling itself, running a fleet of marketable rigs across regions such as West Texas, Appalachia, the Rockies, Oklahoma, and South and East Texas, plus operations in Colombia. Another covers pressure pumping, including well stimulation, hydraulic fracturing, cementing and acid pumping in Texas and Appalachia. A third offers directional drilling and measurement-while-drilling services, along with downhole motor rental and supporting software. Beyond these, it provides equipment maintenance to other drilling contractors, electrical controls and automation work for energy, marine and mining clients, and holds non-operating working interests in oil and gas properties in Texas and New Mexico.

Founded in 1978 and headquartered in Houston, Texas, Patterson-UTI Energy is listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker PTEN.

What they said
Patterson-UTI reported Q2 2026 results and management discussed industry dynamics, operational performance, and capital allocation priorities. Management highlighted a strong inflection in U.S. drilling and completions activity during Q2, driven by private E&P demand, leading to rig reactivations, upgrades to higher-spec rigs, and a tight completions market. Company-wide revenue increased sequentially, adjusted EBITDA was solid, but GAAP results included non-cash charges primarily related to exiting Contract Drilling operations in Colombia and write-downs of minority investments. Management emphasized technology leadership, premium pricing opportunities for upgraded rigs and gas-burning completions equipment, and the potential for meaningful free cash flow improvement in H2 2026 and into 2027. They reiterated capital allocation priorities: invest in high-return growth opportunities, improve free cash flow, and return capital to shareholders (targeting at least 50% of adjusted free cash flow).
Guidance
- Expect working capital to be a source of cash in the second half of 2026. - Management expects 2026 adjusted free cash flow to more than fund dividend payments for the year. - Free cash flow expected to improve in H2 2026 and improve meaningfully in 2027. - Company committed to returning at least 50% of adjusted free cash flow to shareholders (no change to prior target). - Implicit operational guidance: drilling day-rate increases on new contracts in the mid-teens (management cited ~10-15% average on new drilling agreements).
Risks flagged
- Geopolitical uncertainty (Middle East conflict) could affect global markets and operations. - Political and commercial risk in Colombia led to exit and non-cash charges; country-level risk in Latin America remains a consideration. - Commodity and component cost inflation (notably tungsten) affecting Drilling Products margins. - Temporary operational risks: ERP system consolidation caused billing delays and working capital headwinds. - Execution risk around reactivations, upgrades, and timing of customer commitments; competitive dynamics and attrition in completions could evolve.
