About Norfolk Southern

Norfolk Southern moves freight by rail across the United States, carrying everything from raw materials to finished goods for businesses that need cargo shipped over land. Its trains haul agricultural products such as grains, animal feed, and processed foods, along with lumber, paper, and a wide array of chemicals including plastics, sulfur, and petroleum-based compounds. The railroad also transports metals, construction materials, heavy equipment, motor vehicles and their parts, and coal, making it a carrier for a broad mix of industrial and consumer supply chains.

Beyond hauling freight point to point, Norfolk Southern links inland shippers to overseas markets by connecting with ports along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. It also runs an intermodal network that combines rail with other transport modes, and it provides passenger rail service for commuters. Its rail lines stretch across roughly 19,300 route miles, reaching 22 states plus the District of Columbia, which places its customer base largely among manufacturers, agricultural producers, and other shippers throughout that region.

The company was incorporated in 1980 and is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. Its shares are listed on the NYSE under the ticker NSC.

What they said
Norfolk Southern reported a strong Q2 2026 with volume and revenue growth driven by energy, intermodal, and industrial products. Management highlighted record revenue ex-fuel, 4% volume growth, and 7% net income and EPS growth. Operationally, the company acknowledged network pressure from higher volumes and winter disruptions but reported recent acceleration in July and improvements in originations, velocity, terminal performance and safety metrics. Financially, adjusted operating ratio was 65.5%, operating income rose ~5%, and adjusted EPS was $3.52. Management updated full-year operating expense guidance to $8.8–$8.9 billion to reflect an incremental $400–$500 million fuel cost increase; CapEx remains about $1.9 billion. Management expressed cautious optimism about sustained demand (domestic intermodal, chemicals, coal) but flagged fuel and inflation as key headwinds. Q&A tone was confident and constructive with management asserting progress on service recovery and pricing opportunities from tighter truck markets.
Guidance
Updated 2026 operating expense outlook: $8.8B–$8.9B (previously $8.2B–$8.4B) reflecting ~$400–$500M incremental fuel expense. CapEx guidance unchanged at approx. $1.9B. Adjusted operating ratio for the quarter: 65.5%. Adjusted EPS: $3.52. Management expects a sequential margin benefit from fuel in Q3 and believes they can outperform normal seasonality by up to ~100 bps; noted a ~4% wage increase effective in July that will temper some benefit.
Risks flagged
Sustained higher fuel prices that could depress end-demand; inflationary pressures (compensation, purchased services, materials); wage increases (approx. 4% effective July) impacting margins; merger-related uncertainty and prior business loss/recovery dynamics; operational headwinds from absorbing higher volumes and winter disruptions; Eastern Ohio incident and merger-related expenses (disclosed $15M and $51M respectively).
