About Mosaic

Mosaic makes and supplies concentrated crop nutrients built around phosphate and potash, using its own mines to pull raw material out of the ground and turn it into fertilizers such as diammonium phosphate, monoammonium phosphate and other ammoniated phosphate blends. It is also known for phosphate-based animal feed ingredients sold under the Biofos and Nexfos names, plus a magnesium-sulfate potash product called K-Mag.

The company runs through three segments: Phosphates, Potash, and Mosaic Fertilizantes. Potash from Mosaic goes into compound fertilizers, animal feed, industrial uses, de-icing products and water-softener regenerants, while the business also sells nitrogen-based nutrients, additional feed ingredients, and related services, and trades in phosphate, potash and nitrogen products it buys and resells. Its customers span wholesale distributors, retail chains, farm cooperatives, independent retailers, individual farmers and large national accounts.

The Mosaic Company was incorporated in 2004 and is headquartered in Tampa, Florida. Its shares are listed on the NYSE under the ticker MOS.

What they said
Mosaic described a difficult market driven primarily by disrupted sulfur supply (Strait of Hormuz closure, Kazakhstan blockade) leading to elevated spot sulfur prices. Management has curtailed phosphate production, minimized purchases of high-cost raw materials, deferred/redirected capital, and locked a significant portion of third-quarter sulfur at materially lower-than-spot contract prices. They emphasized aggressive SG&A cost reductions, balance sheet fortification (terming out short-term debt and an untapped $2.5B revolver), and strategic reallocation of capital toward higher-return opportunities including Mosaic Biosciences. Operationally, curtailments drove reduced fixed-cost absorption and elevated idle expenses in Phosphates and Fertilizantes, with Potash completing planned turnaround activity. Management provided specific near-term input cost guidance for Q3 (realized sulfur and ammonia) and DAP pricing ranges, reiterated a working capital liberation target for the year ($300–$500M midpoint ~$400M) and laid out expected seasonal patterns in Brazil (large Q3 sales and subsequent Q4 collections). They also noted potential medium-term tailwinds from reduced phosphate application in 2025–26 that could lift crop prices and eventual fertilizer demand. Overall, the tone was cautious and pragmatic: acknowledging significant headwinds but emphasizing confidence in Mosaic’s liquidity, cost actions, contractual relationships for advantaged raw materials, and optionality to weather the downturn until markets normalize.
Guidance
Q3 realized sulfur costs: ~$700–$710/long ton; Q3 realized ammonia costs: ~$610–$620/tonne; DAP FOB pricing guidance: $820–$840/tonne; Q3 sales guidance: ~1.1 million to 1.4 million tonnes (sales range referenced by management); Working capital liberation for full year: $300–$500 million (midpoint ~$400M), with $100–$200M expected in Q3 and bulk in Q4; CapEx reduced to about $1.2 billion for the year (down from prior $1.5B and $1.25B updates), with a Q3 CapEx run-rate around ~$300M then dropping materially in Q4; Expectation that debt will be stable in Q3 and modestly down in Q4 if conditions don’t worsen; Fertilizantes: Q3 profitability expected down vs Q2 but potential contributions from coproducts, distribution and ~ $30M of Biosciences sales in Brazil with ~40% contribution margin.
Risks flagged
Elevated and volatile sulfur prices due to geopolitical disruptions (Strait of Hormuz closure, Kazakhstan blockade); sustained sulfur constraints leading to prolonged production curtailments; reduced farmer fertilizer application (North America and Brazil) causing lower demand and potential yield impacts; weaker prepayments/changes in buyer behavior in Brazil impacting working capital timing; higher freight costs and mix shifts reducing potash netbacks; potential for prolonged market dislocation into 2027 which would require additional balance-sheet or operational actions.
