What they said
Halliburton reported solid Q2 2026 results with $5.7B revenue, adjusted operating margin of 12%, $824M operating cash flow, and $668M free cash flow. International revenue was strong at $3.4B (up ~6% YoY) — its highest Q2 in over a decade — driven by a broad set of contract awards across regions, including notable wins in The Middle East (integrated field management in Iraq), Suriname (TotalEnergies), and resumed unconventional activity (e.g., Jafurah, Argentina/Vaca Muerta). North America showed sequential improvement with white space being filled, rig adds, and pricing gains in land completions; management is actively optimizing fleet deployment globally to chase higher-margin opportunities. Management emphasized the importance of energy security after recent geopolitical events, expects multi-year rebuilding of inventories and diversification of supply, and reiterated focus on technology, digital/software (Landmark, Sikal, Zeus IQ), automation, capital discipline, and returns. Q3 guidance assumed steady activity from current levels (no recovery to pre-conflict levels and no major new disruptions). Management expects international ex-Middle East growth in the low double digits for the year and sees margin expansion over time given contract mix, pricing, and scale benefits, though near-term mobilization/start-up costs and Middle East uncertainty create some variability.
Guidance
- Q3 2026 assumptions: steady activity versus current levels (management did not build in recovery to pre-war levels nor major additional disruption). - Q3 segment revenue guidance discussed: Completion & Production (C&P): flat to down ~2% (sequential); Drilling & Evaluation (D&E): down ~3% to 5% (sequential) — per management commentary. (Also: mix and seasonality expected to influence margins; software is seasonally higher in Q3.) - International (ex-Middle East) expected to grow low double digits for the year (2026). - Buybacks: management plans to reestablish a run rate of repurchases (approx. $200M in Q2 repurchased) and increase buybacks on a continuous basis (opportunistic, but not lump-sum).
Risks flagged
- Ongoing conflict and security volatility in The Middle East — activity remains highly fluid and recovery timing is uncertain. - Mobilization and start-up costs associated with new international contract awards can weigh on near-term margins. - Potential step-backs in activity due to geopolitical escalations (e.g., recent week’s escalations) could delay recovery. - Product-line and geographic mix risk (e.g., seasonality of software sales; sale of chemical business reduces C&P revenue base). - Execution risk in scaling unconventional operations internationally (mobilizations, local logistics, and supply chain such as sand and water availability).
