Forestar focuses on turning raw land into residential building lots. The company buys parcels of ground and puts in the infrastructure needed to support new single-family home neighborhoods, and it is best known for this land development work that sits just ahead of actual home construction.
Once lots are fully prepared, Forestar sells them on to home construction companies, which then build and market the finished houses. Its role in the chain is therefore upstream of homebuilding itself, supplying ready-to-build sites rather than houses. Forestar operates as a subsidiary of D.R. Horton, Inc.
Forestar is headquartered in Arlington, Texas. Its shares are listed on the NYSE under the ticker FOR.
