About Kirby

Kirby operates barges that carry bulk liquids across America's inland waterways and coastlines, reaching the Mississippi River System, the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, all three U.S. coasts, and routes to Alaska and Hawaii. Its tank barges move petrochemicals, black oil and refined petroleum products, and agricultural chemicals, while a smaller offshore fleet of dry-bulk barges and tugboats handles coastal dry-bulk cargo. The company is best recognized for this marine transport network built around tank barges and towing vessels.

Beyond shipping, Kirby runs a distribution and services business that sells parts and aftermarket support for engines, transmissions, reduction gears, motors, drives, and electrical and energy storage systems. This segment also rebuilds diesel engines and related machinery for customers in oilfield services, marine, power generation, and on-highway transport, rents out equipment such as generators, compressors, lift trucks, and refrigeration trailers, and builds oilfield equipment including pressure pumping units and electrical systems. Kirby's customers span private industry as well as the United States government.

The company traces back to 1921, when it began as Kirby Exploration Company, Inc., before adopting the Kirby Corporation name in 1990. Its shares trade on the NYSE under the ticker KEX.

Last earnings call, Jan 29, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Kirby Corporation's 2025 fourth-quarter earnings call highlighted a record year with solid Q4 execution. Management reported strong free cash flow (> $400M), $100M in share repurchases, and $130M debt paydown. Marine Transportation saw inland utilization improve to mid-high 80s and coastal utilization mid-high 90s; inland term renewals and spot pricing were down low-single-digits sequentially but rebounded in January. Inland operating margins were in the low 20% range; coastal showed strong pricing and demand. Distribution & Services (DNS)/Power Gen was a standout with backlog growth and high-single-digit margins in some areas; PowerGen revenue growth expected 10-20% with backlog up 30% YoY. 2026 guidance expects steady growth: inland barge utilization avg low-90% and inland revenues up low- to mid-single-digits; overall consistent YoY earnings growth; Q1 to be affected by seasonal winter weather; 2026 a lower maintenance year. Management noted potential upside from Venezuelan crude flows and constrained newbuild activity supporting pricing. Capital allocation: ~$65M growth CapEx; potential bolt-on acquisitions considered; share buybacks continue. Risks included weather/seasonality, inflation (labor, medical costs), OEM supply chain/lumpiness for PowerGen, and uncertainty over Venezuelan volumes. Overall tone constructive and cautiously optimistic.
Guidance
Full-year 2026: expect steady growth and consistent year-over-year earnings growth. Inland: barge utilization to average low 90% for full year; inland revenues expected to increase low to mid single digits year-over-year. Coastal: revenue expected up mid single digits (comment). Q1: seasonal winter weather will weigh on revenues and margins. PowerGen: expect 10-20% growth (management's expectation); DNS margins mid to high single digits for 2026, with higher margins later as behind-the-meter shipments increase. CapEx: ~$65M growth (with under $20M for new Houston building). Share repurchases to continue (no specific future amount provided).
Risks flagged
Weather/seasonality (winter storms, ice) that can disrupt navigation and slow operations; inflationary pressures including wage and medical costs; OEM supply chain constraints causing lumpiness in PowerGen deliveries; uncertainty around Venezuelan crude volumes (could be upside or not material); limited newbuild activity (though supportive) and retirement estimates uncertainty; potential margin pressure from high proportion of backup power (lower margin) in PowerGen shipments.
