About Black Hills

Black Hills supplies electricity and natural gas to households and businesses across several American states through its network of subsidiaries. The company is best known for running two main lines of service: one that generates and delivers electric power, and another that distributes gas to homes and industry. Its electric operations reach customers in Colorado, Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming, drawing on a mix of wind, natural gas, and coal-fired generation, along with a coal mine near Gillette, Wyoming, while its gas operations serve customers across Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming.

The business is split into an Electric Utilities division and a Gas Utilities division, each built around long networks of transmission and distribution lines, storage facilities, and compression equipment needed to move power and fuel to customers. Alongside these regulated utility services, Black Hills also builds and services gas infrastructure for transportation customers, handles appliance repairs for residential gas and electric subscribers, and constructs electrical systems for large industrial clients.

Black Hills was founded in 1941 and is headquartered in Rapid City, South Dakota. Its shares are listed on the NYSE under the ticker BKH.

Last earnings call, Aug 5, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Black Hills Corporation's Q2 2026 earnings call highlighted solid operational and financial execution in the first half of 2026. Management emphasized they are on track to achieve full-year earnings guidance, delivered stronger adjusted EPS versus prior year driven by new rates and rider recoveries, and continued execution of a near $1 billion capital plan including the Lange II 99 MW generation project (on schedule for Q4). The company reported a large data center demand pipeline exceeding 3 GW with ~600 MW included in the financial plan through 2030 (notably Microsoft and Meta customers), and advanced negotiations for a 1.8 GW opportunity. Management also reported progress on multiple rate reviews and wildfire mitigation, placed a major Ready Wyoming transmission project in service at end of 2025, and obtained 6 of 7 required approvals for the planned merger with Northwestern Energy. During Q&A, management was confident that Crusoe’s exit did not affect negotiations for the large hyperscale opportunity and provided timing expectations for the Montana regulatory decision (mid‑October to mid‑November). Overall, tone was constructive and focused on execution, with acknowledgement of cost pressures and regulatory/legal considerations.
Guidance
Management reiterated they are on track to achieve their full‑year earnings guidance (no numeric revision provided). Specific operational guidance/forecasts mentioned: Lange II generation project to be placed in service in Q4 2026; approximately 600 MW of data center load is included in the company’s financial plan through 2030; Montana regulatory decision expected mid‑October to mid‑November; continued expectation to finalize large‑load commercial agreements by the end of the quarter (but with caveat if delayed).
Risks flagged
Higher financing and depreciation costs (noted as headwind); weather variability (Q2 weather slightly unfavorable to normal and YTD weather headwind); regulatory approval risk (multiple ongoing rate reviews and pending Montana decision); unsettled parties opposing aspects of the merger (environmental opponents in Montana); execution risk on complex large‑load commercial agreements; potential need for additional generation/transmission investment if load grows beyond included plan.
