Last earnings call, Jul 27, 2026 AI summary

What they said
UHS reported mixed-but-constructive Q2 2026 results: adjusted EPS of $5.98 (+12% YoY) and adjusted EBITDA less NCI of $678M (+5% YoY). Operationally, acute and behavioral volumes rebounded, ED visits and certain higher-acuity service lines (urology, neurology, cardiology) improved, and the company added 177 licensed acute care beds (a ~2.5% same-facility capacity increase) and opened a new de novo hospital (Alan B. Miller Medical Center in Palm Beach Gardens). Management highlighted continued expense-management initiatives, investments in outpatient capacity (ASCs, freestanding EDs) and technology (including AI and revenue cycle) and expects Talkspace to close mid‑August, which should accelerate behavioral outpatient growth. The quarter included a $100M out-of-period benefit from the approved Florida DPP program for 2025, which was not contemplated in original guidance; excluding that benefit, adjusted EBITDA less NCI fell short of internal expectations primarily due to higher professional/general liability reserves (~$28M), the San Antonio behavioral facility (~$20M), and a slower ramp at Cedar Hill (~$15M). Management reiterated active capital allocation via organic investment and a material share-repurchase program (authorized $978M; prior repurchases ~$800–$900M YTD).
Guidance
Qualitative forward guidance provided: management noted a modestly lowered midpoint of same-facility admission growth for the back half of 2026 (reflecting first-half performance), expects back-half EBITDA acceleration driven by new bed capacity ramp, improved performance at Cedar Hill (expecting breakeven in 2026), moderation of behavioral headcount/labor growth in H2, and seasonal rebounds (e.g., Nevada). They did not include any 2026 benefit from the newly approved Florida DPP program in guidance and stated they will record any 2026 program only if/when it is approved. No specific numeric full‑year revenue or EPS targets were provided on the call.
Risks flagged
Primary risk factors and headwinds discussed: increases in professional and general liability (malpractice) reserves and severity of claims across the industry; uncertainty/timing around CMS recertification for the San Antonio behavioral facility; declines in exchange coverage leading to increased self-pay/uninsured volumes and ~$10M incremental exchange impact (from $75M to $85M); payer aggressiveness on denials/patient status; potential future reductions in Medicaid supplemental payments under OBBBA starting in 2028; and general regulatory/legislative uncertainty (DPP program renewals, tort reform).
