Universal Display works on organic light-emitting diode technology and the materials behind it, aimed chiefly at display screens and solid-state lighting. It is known for its UniversalPHOLED materials, which manufacturers use when building displays, lighting products and other goods, and it backs this work with a large patent portfolio of roughly 5,500 granted and pending filings that it owns, licenses exclusively or can sublicense.
Beyond its core materials business, the company develops and commercializes related OLED technologies, including flexible OLED construction, an organic vapor jet printing method, thin-film encapsulation used to protect flexible and plastic-based components, and phosphorescent OLED materials suited to printing processes. It also offers technology development and support to outside companies bringing their own OLED products to market, and it conducts contract research into chemical materials with uses beyond OLEDs.
Founded in 1985, Universal Display is headquartered in Ewing, New Jersey. Its shares are listed on the NASDAQ under the ticker OLED.
