AI summary

Nucor trades at $248.38 after a 6.3% decline, sitting between its 50-day average of $254.28 and 200-day average of $210.67. The GekkoIndex reads 61.5, placing the stock in the Accumulation zone. Price remains 12.5% above Gekko Fair Value of $220.87, a gap that bears watching.

The week's activity centers on Q3 2026 guidance that missed both Freedom Broker's estimates and Street consensus, prompting Freedom Broker to downgrade Nucor from Buy to Hold and lower its price target. Wells Fargo also adjusted its price target to $280 from $285 while keeping an Overweight rating. Steel Dynamics fell alongside Nucor on the same guidance concerns, with commentary framing the issue as cost pressures rather than demand weakness. Separately, Nucor declared its 214th consecutive quarterly cash dividend of $0.56 per share, payable 10 November 2026 to holders of record as of 30 September 2026. Q2 2026 results, referenced in recent coverage, showed $10.4 billion in revenue, up 23% year over year, and adjusted EPS of $4.84 against a $4.57 estimate, with record steel mill shipments of 7.1 million tons.

Nucor's next earnings report is scheduled for 26 October 2026, 36 days out and beyond a typical 20-trading-day hold. No insider, Congress, or unusual options activity appears in the current windows. One billionaire holder and two trailblazer holders are noted. Seasonally, the next 20 trading days have averaged a 2% gain over five years, rising in three of those years. Analyst coverage from 11 firms shows 9 Buy and 2 Hold ratings, with a consensus target of $285.31.

About Nucor

Nucor produces and sells steel across a wide range of forms, including hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and galvanized sheet, plate, structural beams, piling, and bar products such as rebar. Its mills also trade steel and move rebar into the market, reaching service centers, fabricators, and manufacturers located throughout North America. The company is known for this wide-ranging steel manufacturing operation.

Nucor runs three main lines of business. One focuses on the mill-based steel production noted above. A second, its Steel Products area, turns out tubing, electrical conduit, racking, joists, decking, fasteners, metal building systems, insulated panels, grating, and wire items, most of which go into nonresidential building projects, and it also runs a piling distribution business. The third, Raw Materials, makes direct reduced iron, brokers metals such as pig iron and hot briquetted iron, supplies ferro-alloys, recycles scrap metal, and drills for natural gas; scrap from this unit goes to electric arc furnace mills and foundries as well as aluminum makers and other metal users. Across these operations, buyers come from farming, auto manufacturing, building, energy, oil and gas, heavy machinery, infrastructure, and transport, and Nucor reaches them through its own sales staff plus its internal distribution and trading arms.

Founded in 1958, Nucor is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. Its stock trades on the NYSE under the ticker NUE.

Last earnings call, Jul 27, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Nucor reported a strong Q2 2026: record steel mill shipments (7.1 million tons), a quarterly EPS beat (net earnings $1.2 billion, $5.04 per share; adjusted $4.84), and about $2 billion of EBITDA. Management emphasized safety progress, returned $479 million to shareholders via dividends and buybacks (41% of net earnings), and reiterated full-year capital expenditure guidance of ~$2.5 billion (approximately 60% toward growth projects). Operationally, demand was described as robust and broad-based across key end markets (defense, energy, data centers, reshoring-related manufacturing), with several growth projects reaching EBITDA-positive run rates (Lexington micromill, Kingman melt shop, Brandenburg plate mill). Major construction projects remain on time and on budget (West Virginia sheet mill commissioning, Berkeley galv line, Crawfordsville coating), with West Virginia expected to begin commercial ramp in early 2027 and reach ~50% utilization by the end of year one. Management expects steel mill performance to be toward the higher end of the previously guided 5%–10% range and reaffirmed an industry demand growth outlook of ~2% for 2026. Preoperating/start-up costs remain elevated ($120 million in Q2) and are expected to stay elevated through 2026 and 2027. Overall tone was confident, with management repeatedly emphasizing execution, strong market fundamentals, and multiyear tailwinds.
Guidance
- Capital expenditures: reaffirmed ~$2.5 billion for 2026 (about 60% allocated to growth projects). - Expectation for steel mills to be toward the higher end of previously guided range of 5%–10% (implied improvement vs. prior quarters). - West Virginia mill: target ~50% utilization by the end of year 1 (post-startup ramp through 2027 into 2028). - Industry demand: reaffirmed ~2% growth for 2026. - Preoperating/start-up costs: Q2 preop costs totaled $120 million; expected to remain elevated through 2026 and 2027. - No explicit revenue or EPS numeric guidance range revisions were issued beyond the commentary above.
Risks flagged
- Rising imports in certain product categories (beams, rebar) could pressure domestic volumes/pricing despite current demand. - Elevated preoperating and start-up costs (~$120M in Q2) expected to continue through 2026–2027. - Working capital build (higher inventories and receivables) due to higher backlog and higher valuations could moderate cash flow in the near term. - Seasonality and fewer fiscal shipping days in Q4 could temper sequential results despite strong demand. - Price/transfer lag issues in DRI pricing tied to pig iron index — potential margin timing risk. - Macroeconomic and policy risks (e.g., import remedies, demand variability) noted implicitly via safe-harbor language.
