It gathers and processes ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, which it sells on to steel mills, foundries, refineries, smelters and other metal producers. Alongside this, Commercial Metals makes and sells finished long steel goods such as rebar, merchant bars and structural sections, plus semi-finished billets for re-rolling or forging. It has particular recognition for concrete-reinforcement steel used in buildings, hospitals, bridges, stadiums and similar large structures.

Its customer base spans fabricators, manufacturers, distributors, contractors and construction firms, and it operates in the United States, Poland, China and other markets abroad. Besides its core steel lines, Commercial Metals rents and sells equipment to concrete installers and other businesses, and produces specialty items including heavy-duty bars for truck trailers, bar steel for energy applications, and armor plate for military vehicles.

What they said
CMC reported a strong fiscal Q3 with core EBITDA up 78.6% year-over-year to $354 million and core EBITDA margin expanding to 14.2%. Adjusted net earnings rose substantially after excluding acquisition-related and noncash purchase accounting items. Management highlighted progress on its TAG (Transform, Advance and Grow) initiatives, successful integration and early contributions from its recent Precast acquisitions, and ongoing deleveraging of the balance sheet. Operational drivers included metal margin expansion (notably higher metal margins per ton), scrap optimization, manufacturing yield improvements, and commercial discipline. Management provided a confident outlook for Q4 with an expected sequential improvement in core EBITDA driven by the absence of mill outages (~$20 million uplift), improving volumes and margins, stability in scrap costs, and continued TAG benefits. They reiterated full-year Precast EBITDA guidance and outlined capital allocation priorities tied to achieving a ~2x net leverage target (after which share repurchases and further growth investments may be considered). The company also discussed European tailwinds from CBAM and safeguard measures, the ramp progress at Arizona 2 and the West Virginia mill, and an upcoming Investor Day on August 5.
Guidance
- Q4 FY26: Management expects a sequential quarter-over-quarter improvement in consolidated adjusted/core EBITDA in the ~$40M to $50M range, driven by: ~+$20M benefit in North American Steel Group from absence of mill outages, similar benefit from higher volumes and margin expansion, mid-teens adjusted EBITDA growth in Construction Solutions Group, modestly higher adjusted EBITDA in Europe (excluding CO2 credit timing). Scraps expected to remain relatively stable in the near term. - Precast: Management maintained full-year Precast EBITDA outlook at $165M to $175M. - West Virginia mill: Targeted ramp to ~250K-300K tons in fiscal 2027. - Capital allocation: Management expects to approach ~2x net leverage (a fulcrum for returning to elevated share repurchases and further growth investments). - CapEx: FY27 capital spending expected to be ~ $200M lower than FY26 (with the final West Virginia spend included).
Risks flagged
- Weather: Wet conditions materially delayed Precast shipments and contributed to lighter volumes; weather risk remains a near-term factor. - Purchase accounting and integration: Non-cash amortization of acquired backlogs and integration costs widen the gap between core EBITDA and reported earnings (~$60–$65M per quarter impact next two quarters). - Energy costs / CO2 credits (Europe): Timing of CO2 credits and potential energy cost volatility could affect European results. - Imports / trade risk: Rising imports (notably from South Korea) and uncertainty around trade actions could affect domestic pricing and margins. - New domestic capacity: Additional mill capacity and entrants increase supply risk though management believes demand growth and trade measures mitigate impact. - Macro and execution risks: General macro uncertainty, potential delays in project awards, and integration execution risks for recent acquisitions.
