What they said
IMAX reported strong Q2 2026 results driven by exceptionally strong box office performance, particularly from Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey. Management highlighted revenue of $103 million (up 12% year-over-year), adjusted EPS of $0.43 (up 65% YoY), and adjusted EBITDA of $48 million with a 46.6% margin. The Odyssey delivered a record global opening for IMAX ($52 million opening weekend like-for-like) and strong weekday and presale performance, generating heightened exhibitor and filmmaker interest, selling out many shows weeks in advance, and driving uplift in system demand and merchandising. Management emphasized disciplined cost control, continued investment in technology and system rollouts, and the potential for continued box office strength in H2 with titles like Dune Part Three and Spider-Man contributing. They reiterated their capital allocation priorities: invest in network growth and opportunistic share repurchases when appropriate. China was called out as a weaker H1 but with signs of recovery and better prospects in H2 and 2027. Management discussed opportunities and constraints around expanding 70mm film systems, merchandising growth, and an IMAX in-vehicle entertainment partnership in China.
Guidance
Company reiterated prior guidance for the year and provided a systems/sales range of $160 million to $175 million (aiming toward that range). Management said they are not changing their EBITDA guidance for the year and expect strong box office growth in the back half of 2026 (no explicit numeric EBITDA upgrade provided).
Risks flagged
Exposure to volatile film box-office performance and slate timing; China market volatility (disappointing H1 with partial recovery expected); limited scalability and high economics of 70mm film projection systems; dependency on studios and filmmakers to 'lean in' on IMAX format; potential timing and mix variability in JV vs direct system sales; general market and macro risks as noted in forward-looking statement disclaimers.
