AI summary

Corning (GLW) closes at $150.13, up 1.6% on the day, sitting between its 50-day average of $154.99 and 200-day average of $147.07. The GekkoIndex reads 60.8, placing the stock in the Accumulation zone, up 6.6 over the last five sessions. Price sits 2% below Gekko Fair Value of $153.20. Over the past year the stock is up 95.3%, though the three-month return is -23% and the one-month return is -1.5%.

This week's news centers on two threads: a legal and capital-markets overhang, and thematic optics buying. Bronstein, Gewirtz & Grossman and Pomerantz have both disclosed investigations into Corning tied to a stock drop following an at-the-market equity offering of up to $2 billion in common stock, with one article noting shares fell on 14 September on the equity distribution agreement. Separately, Corning is described as expanding AI and telecom partnerships with Meta, Amazon, NVIDIA and Verizon, and shares rose 3% alongside gains in Lumentum and Coherent amid what is described as thematic rotation into optical connectivity tied to hyperscaler AI infrastructure demand, though one report notes Corning's gains lagged those peers.

The next earnings date falls on 27 October, 37 days out and beyond a typical 20-trading-day window; the last report on 28 July beat estimates, with EPS of $0.78 versus $0.76 expected, though the last reaction was -13.5%. Seasonality over the next 20 trading days has averaged -0.7% across 5 years, positive in 2 of them. Ten analysts cover the stock, with 7 buy and 3 hold ratings and a consensus target of $192.44.

Last earnings call, Jul 28, 2026 AI summary

What they said
Corning reported an strong Q2 2026: consolidated sales grew 17% year-over-year to $4.74 billion and EPS rose 30% to $0.78. Gross margin expanded 120 bps to 39.6% and operating margin expanded 190 bps to 20.9%; ROIC rose to 14.9% and free cash flow increased to $1.42 billion. Optical Communications led performance with sales up 32% to $2.07 billion and net income up 77% (NPAT 21% of sales); enterprise sales grew 65% (Gen AI product sales nearly doubled). Solar sales increased ~90% and Glass Innovations modestly outperformed the handset market despite memory-driven headwinds. Management reiterated and detailed the Springboard growth plan: targeting an annualized sales run rate of $20B by end of 2026, $30B by end of 2028, and $40B by end of 2030, with an expected sales CAGR of 19% from Q4 2026 to Q4 2030 and earnings growing faster than sales. Photonics is described as a major long-term opportunity (a $10B addressable map), but Corning did not give specific revenue guidance for photonics next year. Management expressed confidence in demand, execution and margin expansion, particularly in optical, but acknowledged some near-term end-market headwinds (memory-driven handset weakness, muted automotive) and the continued need to execute capacity ramps and solar manufacturing improvements.
Guidance
Springboard targets: $20B annualized sales run rate by end-2026, $30B by end-2028, $40B by end-2030; sales CAGR ~19% from Q4 2026 to Q4 2030; earnings expected to grow faster than sales; Photonics long-term addressable ~$10B (no specific near-term revenue guidance); management expects to be at or above prior 20% operating margin target and Q3 guidance is intended to show similar YoY growth to Q2 (with potential to hit the $20B run rate a quarter early). Longer-term carrier growth expected mid-single-digits.
Risks flagged
Memory price declines expected to reduce handheld units by mid-teens percent for the full year, which can pressure handset volumes; automotive market remains muted; execution and timing risk around Photonics scale-up and supply chain readiness; capacity ramp and solar manufacturing execution risk (recent improvements but still ramping); general market/ macro / timing uncertainties noted in forward-looking statements and GAAP/core adjustments (hedged exposures, restructuring/impairment items).
