About Smithfield Foods

Smithfield Foods makes bacon, sausage, hot dogs, deli meats, ham, and other prepared foods, alongside cuts of raw pork, serving both everyday shoppers and food-service kitchens. Its labels include Smithfield, Eckrich, Nathan's Famous, Farmland, Armour, Farmer John, Kretschmar, Krakus, John Morrell, Cook's, Gwaltney, Carando, Margherita, Curly's, and Smithfield Culinary, plus store-brand goods made for other retailers.

The company divides its work into distinct areas. One turns raw meat into finished packaged items for grocery and restaurant buyers. Another slaughters and cuts live hogs into bellies, hams, loins, ribs, and similar pieces, shipping them to retail, food-service, and industrial buyers domestically and to markets abroad such as China, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, and Canada. A separate arm breeds and raises hogs, some on land it owns and some through farmers under contract, while also selling feed and grain and handling logistics. A final piece extracts materials from hogs for bioscience purposes, notably an ingredient used in blood-thinning medicine, and it also handles pork processing south of the border in Mexico.

Founded in 1936, Smithfield Foods keeps its main office in Smithfield, Virginia, and its stock trades on the NASDAQ under the ticker SFD.

What they said
Smithfield reported record second quarter and first-half adjusted operating profit driven by its vertically integrated model, disciplined execution, and strategic investments in brands and innovation. Consolidated Q2 sales were $3.7 billion (down 2.3% year-over-year) but adjusted operating profit reached a Q2 record of $300 million and adjusted net income and EPS were records, up 13% year-over-year. Packaged Meats faced volume declines (Easter timing impact and softer consumer), higher freight/diesel and packaging costs impacting margins, but management expects a stronger second half and particularly a solid fourth quarter aided by raw material tailwinds and distribution gains. Hog Production faces commodity-price-driven pressure with expectations of seasonal normalization and potential Q4 losses driven by futures; management noted operational improvements and potential upside to commodity assumptions. Management emphasized liquidity, strong cash generation, continued investment in brands and innovation, and disciplined cost mitigation.
Guidance
Management provided forward commentary (not a formal numeric full-year guidance) indicating: - Expectation of a strong second half for Packaged Meats, with Q3 as the seasonal low point and a solid Q4. - Packaged Meats call-down guidance referenced in discussion: roughly $35–$40 million at midpoint for the back half versus prior expectations. - Anticipated tailwind from lower raw material (pork) costs in H2, but continued elevated fuel, freight and packaging costs. - Hog Production: futures-implied prices used as foundational assumptions (3%–8% below 2025 levels in H2; Q4 roughly 13% below prior year in futures), implying potential losses in Q4 (~$20 per head referenced in the crush model) though management expects to outperform operationally and sees upside risk to prices.
Risks flagged
Key risks mentioned include: softer consumer demand and trade-downs impacting volumes; volatility in commodity/pricing (lean hog prices and the pork cutout); elevated freight, diesel and resin-based packaging costs; promotional and trade dynamics affecting volumes; recent deflation in the ham market; and macro uncertainty that could affect demand and input costs.
