What they said
Charter discussed Q2 2026 operational results and strategy. Key positives included adding 406k Spectrum Mobile lines in the quarter (1.7M over 12 months), video customer losses improving (down 21k vs down 80k prior year), rural subsidized customer growth (+47k), and a fully deployed gigabit-plus network. Revenue was down 1.7% YoY and EBITDA (ex-Cox transition) declined 3.2%; Internet net losses (-172k) and softer gross additions drove broadband weakness. Management reiterated confidence in a significant free cash flow ramp driven by a reduced capital expenditure trajectory, a late-July/early-August Internet cost pass-through, political advertising tailwinds in H2, AI cost and service benefits beginning to ramp, and additional cost-management actions. They acknowledged that certain retention offers and promotions suppressed broadband ARPU in H1 and that increased competition (fixed wireless, fiber overlap, mobile substitution) pressured connect activity. Management also addressed potential partnership conversations (e.g., Starlink/SpaceX) but had no announcements and emphasized a capital-light approach to mobility with existing partners (Verizon, T-Mobile). The Cox transaction remains delayed but management expects Spectrum to be a strong entrant into Cox markets once closed.
Guidance
Broadband ARPU expected to improve sequentially in Q3 2026; late-July/early-August internet cost pass-through will be a H2 tailwind; management expects a significant free cash flow ramp driven by a reduced multi-year capital expenditure trajectory; second-half EBITDA to benefit from Internet cost pass-through and political advertising; no change to announced capex trajectory (multiyear plan) and capital-light approach maintained. Management updated (lowered) prior EBITDA guidance for the year but stated they are targeting to outperform that updated outlook.
Risks flagged
Top-of-funnel softness and softer gross additions; increased competition from expanded fixed wireless providers, fiber overlap growth, mobile substitution, and aggressive competitor promotions; potential competitive threats from satellite providers like Starlink (being monitored); pressure on ARPU from retention offers; elevated controllable expenses such as fuel and medical; delays/uncertainty in closing Cox transaction and regulatory hurdles.
